i agree and disagree with some of these post. as far a good dog hunting for whoever and whenever isnt always true. some dogs do have to adjust to there new owners and there new pack. dogs feel stress and anxiety just like people, and new homes and packs probably cause some. the times ive bought dogs i always fed them for a week or two before hunting them and socialized them with the other dogs. and just because a dog is for sale doesnt always make it a cull, even though that is usually the case. my definition of a "GOOD" dog is one that is rangey, with a good nose, is good at holdin a bay but if not will stick with a hog till hes too tired to run. if i raise some pups and by the time they 12 months there still huntin close they go for sale. to me close range is code word for cull. but to alot of people that i know they would sale the dog if he was ranging over 400 yrds.

Maybe Im a rough type when it come to CDs but I put a dog in a situation where they have to do something which involves a small confined space and a pretty rank boar hog. As for age about a year old, I wouldnt want to start one earlier than that.
ive done this with pits that just dont want to turn on. not always necessary, but when it is it works everytime. rough hog with no teeth that will mop him around. i agree with at least a yr old.

i think you are misunderstanding about what these guys meant by "something smaller". i say this because you mentioned feral goats as being smaller. what they are saying is, if your going to start them on hogs you need to try them on a smaller hog. when i start a catch dog i start them on a pig they can easily over power. this builds there confidence. then as there confidence grows so should the pigs you put them on.

sounds like you need to get yourself a nice catchdog, one that you can cut loose from 100 yards away. also an important trait might be to make sure he is fast enough to at least out run your friend... THATS FUNNY!! bout fell out the chair.
