4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Cut Vest for Dog Attacks on: July 15, 2014, 12:01:12 pm
get him a custom made livestock guardian dog "spike collar".

they are designed so that when the attacking dog (or wolf in the lgd case) gets ahold of your dog's throat he gets a mouthful of something he doesn't want. most of the time, they hit the head and throat/neck hardest.
5  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Game cam pic! What is it! on: July 04, 2014, 12:35:46 pm
it's got the head nose and ears of a jersey bull calf on what appears to be a cat body back behind the tree.
6  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Game cam pic! What is it! on: July 04, 2014, 12:33:03 pm
it's head is too long for a cat.

zoom in on the face and look at the distance from eye to nose.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Irish Wolfhound/English Coonhound mix on: June 21, 2014, 11:40:10 am
If you have the time and kennel space . . just go for it and hope for the best. Could be good or worthless. It's kind of like saying, "I met a girl and her grandparents are German and Scotch-Irish. Will she make a good wife?"

she will probably drink too much...
8  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Blue Lacy on: June 18, 2014, 12:44:50 am
they were hill country bred cur type dogs that were bred to be versatile.
the style ranged from having "eye" and working silent like a border collie type dog, to bay, to straight catch.
the type of ranch people that used these dogs raised pasture/turn out hogs, sheep and hair goats, and english cross type cattle. many of them fur hunted and predator hunted by night. in my opinion, this is why the lacy breed has so many inconsistencies in working style. it's also why they are typically shorter range type dogs. when i was growing up, most of the lacy type dogs were yellow and black, in recent times, selection for the dilute gene within the registered stuff turned them all blue and red/orange. it's been 15 years since i've seen a true yellow colored lacy and longer since i've seen a true black one. there are still a few good ones around, but most of the good blood is dying out with the old timers that spent their lives with them. i always felt a lacy contributed the most through crossing, they knick real well with the east texas type dogs.
9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: How many does it take? on: June 13, 2014, 03:53:14 pm
if a person were to judge according to internet videos and hunting pics, i would think any number under 5 would be  an unpopular answer on this thread...

kidding aside, i like no more than two older dogs and a young one on the ground.
10  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Summer hunting tips... on: June 07, 2014, 04:31:18 pm
getting coke down one is great for those that are getting hot on you, but haven't been hit hard yet.

11  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Summer hunting tips... on: June 07, 2014, 04:27:58 pm
the three things i try to always have "close" are bc powder, vinegar in a spray bottle, and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle...

these three things will bring a stroked dog back quick.
at the very least i keep bc powder on me all the time, i will empty two sleeves into mouth.

wait a bit, and spritz inside of mouth, tongue, and ears with vinegar, this opens up the pores and lets them "breathe".

spray all bare skin on the dog with rubbing alcohol.

another item that will save you in a bad spot is a drench gun and a case of warm coke.
drench the dog with about half a can and wait to see if he may need more in a bit.

all these things are remedies for after the fact, when you are already dealing with one thats stroked,
but all of these things have saved numerous dogs for me. they lessen the after effects also.

if you get to them quick enough and treat him, the likelihood of him running hot later down the road is reduced.

stay away from cold water, the shock can kill one as quick as anything.

that zane grey book is an excellent read, you will love it.
13  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: One eyed strike dog on: June 04, 2014, 03:21:08 pm
it won't affect a good dog.
they will always be keeping an eye out for that next hog...
14  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: My wifes ride on: June 02, 2014, 07:23:18 pm
my mom could reach the third row seat from the driver seat and rattle some teeth like a streak of greased lighting, and never take her eyes off the road...

i have no doubts that a mother that can near max out a custom excursion can handle keeping order all the way back to that last rear facing seat with ease...
15  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Y do people doc dog tail on: May 30, 2014, 09:48:49 pm
i've had several dogs that beat the tip of the tail off and go to chewing and never let it heal.
so i dock them to where when grown its about 2 inches above the hocks. i do everything i keep this way. when i have a litter, nothing gets docked until i know it's something i'm going to keep around.
16  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: blue saddle back curs. on: May 28, 2014, 02:53:30 am
blue is a recessive modifier of black, it's back behind a lot of east texas blood if you dig far enough...
17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: sims blood? on: May 24, 2014, 01:39:07 am
if my memory serves, i believe it has been said they were taylor dogs...
18  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Randy Wright on: May 19, 2014, 11:04:29 am
i think that donald cain never wrote those articles, if i had to guess, randy wright wrote them and sent them to mr. cain, then mr. cain personalized it with an opener and a closer and sent it off to full cry.

best i can say what a "quarter backing lead style" is, is when your dogs lead from the front end but sweep around to the top of the back quarter on each side of the bunch as they do it.

i guess maybe "half a windwill" could describe it. haha.

whatever the trait can be called, i breed for it in my own dogs, as opposed to a dog that will just stake out his spot at the lead of a bunch and just stay there.
19  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: who won ? on: May 18, 2014, 10:33:44 pm
Well, we have to get a triple crown winner before we know if he impacts the breed. With the Jockey club only allowing live cover he will be limited to the amount of mares he can breed. If he does win the Triple Crown, in all likelihood he will be syndicated & only those who have bought a share will get to breed to him.
Secretariet with all the records he broke & winning the Triple Crown was never much of a producer altho a lot of mares out of him produced a lot of winners.

i agree, the triple crown winner has to come first, before you know if he will produce.
though, that doesn't mean the weeding out process on potential canidates doesn't start sooner.

yes, he will be limited, but that doesn't mean there won't be demand in the form of his sons.

secretariat's daughters were producers largely due to the x factor.

20  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: who won ? on: May 18, 2014, 04:38:00 pm
i hate to think horse racing is political (ha).
with the money involved, only the perfect horse will win it.
he will have "no holes" in his pedigree as well as having the pedigree to cross well over the largest percentage of industry mares, have a perfect track record and all the quality, conformation and physical soundness to back everything up. when you think about the amount of money a triple crown winning stud will generate, and the sheer number of get he will produce, i believe politics will dictate the next winner of the triple crown.

the right triple crown winner can boost an entire breed to new heights, the wrong one will set the breed back for generations...
