1  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Robertson County Boar on: October 08, 2011, 09:35:32 pm
edit the pictures man!  Sorry to hear about your dog but we have all seen dogs hurt!  Not everyone on hear wants or needs to see that.

There's a personal message feature that you could have used to suggest that I not post a picture of my wounded dog. There's no "edit" or "delete" or "resign from forum" features available to me, by the way.

Mike -- You deleted my photo and did not bother to tell me about it. I'm deleting all the photos I posted here and to be honest with you, I've learned very little and gained nothing but regret from participating in this forum. Apparently, pressure from animal rights groups prevents you all from discussing and sharing information about caring for and field treating wounds of hunting dogs. That's just too bad.
2  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Robertson County Boar on: October 07, 2011, 04:24:51 pm
Last fall I took two large boars dog-pistol without trouble. And since then I've worked a group of five curs in the field with my experienced dog Red. They are all over 60 lbs. My gyp Uno is a year and half, and I have three males that are just turning 1. My pups have been catching sows, during daylight, all summer long and I was a little worried about how they would do with a big boar hog. I found out Thursday morning nighttime hunting. We hunted in Limestone county 2 days prior at night and found no hogs.  We'd walked about 3 miles around Willow creek in Robertson county and found nothing. The wind was out of the south. We came to a hay meadow and I could see what was probably a raccoon in a tree top at the outer boundary west of us and headed toward it. The dogs alerted and were all running around trying to follow the scent. They went south into Willow creek and bayed in a thicket. I have an HID light and was in the bottom of the creek bed with it trying to find what was in the thicket above. Uno was in the creek bottom with me. I saw the hog turning in the patch of very dense yaupan, and just like that he came down into the creek bottom just 10 feet from me after Uno. I let the HID light hang from my neck and took out my revolver. That got the hog's attention and when he turned his head toward me, Uno grabbed his left ear. The hog immediately charged her and she moved back but he got both his left tusks in her. I've been struggling with sight alignment while wearing a headlight and my first shot was high. But my dogs anticipate running in whenever I fire a round, so they were behind him where Uno was and he turned toward them and I dropped the hog with a quartering shot to the right side of his neck. I knew Uno was hurt and started calling for her and then realized I had five dogs nipping at the downed boar. I grabbed her and checked her out then tried to stop the bleeding. The boar was stretched out flat and couldn't seem to move his head but he was grunting and thrashing his legs a bit so I put another round into the left side of his neck. My other dogs were dragging him off while chewing on him.

Uno's bleeding was controlled and so I gave up trying to stop it and put her on my shoulders and carried her a half mile to the car where I had a stapler. I took a picture of the wounds for the vet before I closed them up.

She's fine but not happy that I put an e-collar on her.

About 10 hours later I went back and got the hog. I'll keep the scull as a trophy. He was in great shape before we got a hold of him. He had 3 inch cutters and a whip-like tail. Had Uno not been hurt I might have taken him to the taxidermy.

I had cut collars on all my dogs that had been catching sows. In retrospect, I should have had a cut vest on Uno. I'm sure she'll hunt again, as she was chewing on the hog after it dropped. I just hope she won't try and catch the big ones.
3  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Cur Pup Update on: June 30, 2011, 12:52:46 pm
I've kept 4 pups from 2 litters of pups from my dogs Red and Molly (a red and a yellow BMC). Here's Red with Camp and Blackie at 4 mos.

Here's Camp at 7 mos.

Here's Blackie and Uno my gyp. She's a year and 4 months. She stayed right at my feet until she got to be a year old. Now she is very gritty.

And here's Swimmer with Red. I have to keep Swimmer away from Blackie who is taller and smarter. Swimmer has a top-dog attitude.

Blackie is hunting 600 to 800 yards out. I have to keep a tracking collar on him. He's very outgoing and loves to hunt. He's hard to keep up with.

Blackie at 7 mos. is taller than Red. Red has really good muscle structure and a very short coat. Camp has Red's coat.

They are woods trained (I don't have access to a pen). I'll see how they do with big boars this fall. Here's a bar they got last weekend. Red, at left, can ruin a ham in seconds.

My dog Lula is both microchipped and spayed. But who am I to judge others? I've been to the county animal control pounds of Jefferson, Liberty and San Jac counties looking for Lula at different times after her epic hunts which she initiates. They have microchip readers there and can scan her and find my name and phone number, as do most vets. I know it works because I've paid the $30 to get her back home before. If you see Lula, she'll wag her tail and walk right up to you. She'll try and come into your home and sit on your sofa. This is what a guy told me after I found her after 3 days  hanging out next to his trailer. I found ketchup packages in her stool. The Cleveland pound was just up the road.

Someone posted that they were interested in a good yellow BMC. There were two in the San Jac County pound (Shepard, Tx) when I visited there about the middle of December. One was 90-100 lb dog. (If the guy that runs the place is not there, just stand in the back your truck and look over the fence to see them. The place in next to the country compactor yard.)

On the other hand, if you find my BMCs on the side of the road, and I don't think you will, please leave them there. They won't come to you, they are microchipped, they are waiting for me, and I'll be back to get him.

One other note. There was a guy recently in mid-Jefferson county had gone into his own animal control business. He'd drive around picking up strays that had IDs then call the owner and extort money. Hope he doesn't have a chip reader. I don't want to pay for community services that already exist and were established and are supported by community legislation.

Lula is microchipped. She had a harness on, but no collar. I stopped to curb the dogs and she decided she'd go hunting. When we do hunt, I put a tracking collar on her because she's hunts way out in front of me. My dogs don't wear anything if they are in the dog box or crated. This fall, we had been hunting a small thicket that was full of hogs and she became a bit of an adrenaline junky. I have places in Dallas and Beaumont and drive back and forth with the dogs. When we hunt, we all get suited up, they wear cut collars and sometimes tracking collars. If I stop to curb them I stand by the truck and tell them to go potty. They know the difference. Lula has acute tunnel vision. She's generally a pain in the rear. If I get her back, I may trade her to someone more organized for hunting with dogs. I'll let them break her off trash.
8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Can someone shoot your dog on: December 25, 2010, 10:54:28 pm
There's a good neighbor policy that landowners generally follow (see campbell timberland hunting lease agreements available on the web). Landowners livestock are just as likely to cross a fence as is a hunter's dog. If a dog harasses livestock, or if the property owner feels threatened, then the landowner may be able to shoot your dog.

I worry about this all the time. I hunt all over the state.

Thanks all, for the help. She's been missing since October. I stopped checking the pound about mid November. And I've driven the area pretty much daily. I'm sure someone picked her up. I am inserting hosted photos of her. She has two bumps on her right ear, a 6-inch scar on her left hind leg (from a hog). She's very friendly to people. Photos are also here, at biggamehoundsmen.com:

About photos, her photos are posted on biggamehoundsmen.com in the missing dogs forum. DerekE from there suggested I post the missing notice here in the easttexashogdoggers.com forum.

I've tried to post a single 120k file of my 2010 best hog, but the site would not allow that either (?).

12  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Missing Cur Dog, Jefferson County on: December 24, 2010, 08:39:15 pm
I'm missing a 2-year-old tri-color cur dog, black, brown and white. She is 40 lbs, spayed and microchipped. She chased after a deer in the Edgewater area near Tram Rd and Hwy 69 and did not come back. She has two prominent bumps on her right ear, and a 6-in scar on her left hind leg (from a hog). (I'll post photos later. Site is not allowing uploads (?)) She has a great nose and is open mouthed. She was wearing a black harness.
