2  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Hog dogs in Miami!? on: June 09, 2011, 02:20:25 pm
Hello,
I live in Miami and I was looking to get two more hog dogs. I normally hunt up in okkechobe, plantation, or the redlands but I only got one pup and hes a mutt who loves hogs. I was looking for two other dogs to get 2 more pups. But all the people selling are way up north or out of state. Any dogs selling for in south fl?

A buddy of mine does, he runs to the bay and man oh man all 130 pounds of dog slams into a hog its over. Honestly I prefer This. This by far in my opinion is the best thing a man could do.
1. Bulldog (word used in general of mollasar breeds used to hunt boar)
2. Gritty Cur
3. Girtty cur

Simple as this.
Bulldog Pros: They are amazing catch dogs and will go in and get a hold on the hear thats unbelivably strong, you only need one dog to do it and some bulldogs can even have a hot nose and the endurance to be a running catch dog.
Cons: Most tire out pretty quickly, and because they are just so prey driven they dont care if they run into a whole mob of hogs they just go in and catch a god and this drive ends up killing them or getting them cut alot.

Stag hound pros: Fast and gritty with an ok nose and they are talle enough to keep away from a hogs teeth. They have amazing endurance and they don't need a break stick all the time.
Cons: SOME of them arent as gritty as they need to be to catch a hog they are not nearly as powerful as a bulldog and their bite sometimes doesnt quite keep a hog down due to it being more nimble.

I say go with a standard bulldog/pitbull (people both call them bulldogs) or a cross of that with a cur and a hound. I have a American bulldog mix with a black mouth cur thats best catch dog a man could ask for. Runs them down tracks them and catches them. But the cur in him gives him the smarts not to run straight into a 500 pound hog alone.

Hi,
I have two dogs
A boxer and a Mutt (Mutt looks in every way like a heavy set cur)
Both have good prey drive and are very athletic but never seen a hog Mutt is a 9-12 months old and Boxer is 12-15 months. Is it to late to start them on a hog at that would their breed inhibit their hunting ability?
Thanks
Josh
PS the mutt is 63 pounds and will probably get to 65-70 and the boxer is 45-50 pounds but hes bulking up a lot so he will be like 60-75 at least after a program I got him on of protein, some supplements and exercise
