I start letting mine swim a little when they are about 6 months. I'll coon hunt mine first before I hog hunt them so when it's hot I take em to water to cool down. When they are older and running game they cross water pretty good. Just my experience. Good luck

Cajun, Your last post was the story of southern Ohio. Thats what got me running Plotts. Needed dogs with no quit but they had to give a boar no option but to stop and bay up. We still get outran but I have a great feeling after picking up the hounds after a 12 mile race as to them quitting after 700 yards. However I hunt huge tracks of govt land and most landowners where we hunt let you get your dogs with no problem. Dont know what its like to hunt LA or TX but would like to some day.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Meat based dog food ???

The whole dog food issue is a matter of opinion....but Ive been using the Pride Pro 26/20 in the orange bag. I used to use the black bag of Pride which is 24/20 but there is a strain of Plotts I use that when we bear hunted in high elevations the dogs had seizures. The Pride pro has made our dogs look better and a little more muscular. Its chicken based. Theres 100% meat dog food but is really expensive. I dont know if theres a Pride dog food dealer in Texas but going to the 26/20 was worth every penny. jmo swish

Thanks Paul...every hog we bay or catch I remember you encouraging us to keep going. What's awesome is that there were 7 hogs in that bay. There was a big sow and 5 little shoats. The boar was wanting to fight lol. Once my buddy shot the boar my Plott Peaches went and bayed that sow but every time Brian got close it would break and after about 2 hours of that he grabbed peaches and called it a day. Paul...thank you once again...im really grateful swish

p.s. Cajun, This thread started with a question about adding a 1/4 bulldog to a Plott to make it a better bear dog. I want to make the point is that you have pure bred Plotts, You acquired some dogs that did what you wanted. You bred in a manner that didnt need an outcross of bulldog to get the results you wanted on bear AND hog. Thats awesome breeding. i hope i take some good notes. swish

Cajun, Just got back from WV yesterday. Got on a lease and went to clear some trails. Saw some good bear tracks. Mysteriously some hogs got loose out there. I can start running my Plotts out there sept 7. Let the games begin!

As of right now the National Plott Hound Association who governs the Breed standard for registering dogs will NOT allow an open registration meaning if a plott has no papers it will never have papers. They closed it a long time ago. 95% of the registered Plott hounds in America are UKC.

I have a black and tan that ive bayed hogs with. He's outta a bloodline called "Smith and Combs Smokey". They are a line of black and tans that will humt anything you show them. He Bays tight on hog and bear but is a little too hot nosed but has all the grit in the world. He's lean and moderately fast. Better on a hog track than a bear track for some reason.

What I like about hounds is this.... You can take the same pack of hounds and run a hog, tree a bear, and tree a mountain lion. Hounds were the first hunting bay dogs. Lil wasper I know youve treed bear and bayed hogs with the same open mouthed hounds. Hounds by nature will put their mouth on game and when the game says thats enough they will bay or tree. If a hound wont stay in a hogs face once it gets its clock cleaned...that aint a good hound. Jmo

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Good hunt in Ohio....

Here we dont have a typical hunt. We dont use a catch dog. Anything under 200 lb the plotts can catch and the hogs is an easy grab. That was our biggest hog we killed. We struck on a group and dogs spilt. My brownie dog is a rough bay dog and had him bayed and we shot him in the face once then tried to grab him but he was going crazy so I shot him behind the ear. We have a lot of hills here and its too much of a extra chore to drag a bulldog.
