cantex, when I said expert I wS referring to the deer huntin, not hogs, whether Im an expert deer hunter or not would only be someones opinion. I can say when it comes to deer and turkey, things ive hunted my whole life I am very confident , I hunt with a recurve mainly and am damn good with it. The bucks on my wall say I know that game! Hope to someday be confident with hogs but its gona be a long road.

Reuben, Being of bout the same age as you I can really appreciate this post ' In my lifetime I have been considered by many an expert deer and turkey hunter ! I grew up in the day of field and stream and outdoorlife magazine . My buddys and me read them from cover to cover every month! We talked huntin at school and couldnt wait for the next weekend or next issue! That was before the cyber age, and now here I am an expert hunter / old timer truin to learn to hog hunt ! Hogs are new to ohio and I am basically one of the first to risk house and home to really learn this damn game ! It has overtaken everything but family and I'm enjoyin it to the fullest ! This is a first for me , for years people have come to me for answers and now im havin to ask ! As a young boy I was actually in outdoorlife magazine , (Three in one deer ) ! uou may remember, and we answered numerous questions for deer hunters Round the globe with honest opinions of what they needed to connect ! I was at 13 years old an honest confidant of the Benoit family in Maine for any deer hunters on board. When people contacted us for help we didnt push our agenda on them , we gave honest opinions of what was happenin or needed for that man not based on our own preference ! I guess what Im sayin is when someones askin for help you all ahould appreciate your position and do your best to give an unbiased answer to that question ! I gaurantee anyone readin this I am a hunter - 1st rate ! I may not no the new game but I will learn it ! I hunted 4 miles on foot last night without striking a hog , many would pass this off as a dumb newbie , but the wise will say wow , look at that heres a guy huntin his ass off and rarely gettin a hog and he's an old guy at that ! This old guy is more than capable of learnin a new game ! I am at the top of all ohio hog hunt hoghunters My point i guess in short is Ive spent most of my life givin answers to fellow hunters , now I need help because Im inju
incharted hog teritory ! Very few other than tbob and texas hog dog havevgiven honest help to this giving hunter ! In the future when ya get a newbie dumbass , give him all the help you can, he's tryin to do what you alredy do ! It doesnt make him stupid, it makes him honest because he' askin for yur help ! In this dAy of technological data, the best thing you can give is yur honest help !

Charles, something Ive noticed about forums is that if you read peoples posts, different conversations without actually speaking verbally, its very easy to picture ghings differently than they are. Kinda like reading Where the Red Fern grows and then watching the movie, yur thinking thats not how I pictured it !

I'm not certain Charles, I believe your a veteran ? I was thinking your retired ? These may not be correct, I dont normally talk to to many people, kinda just browse thru most of the time. May have been something I read, Im not sure . Sometimes I'm just a walking brain fart ! I believe youve always kinda steered clear of alot of the drama, maybe thats why I thought that ? At any rate from yur list of injuries I can see youve done yur share of work and livin . I hope yur not feelin old or anything, I certainley wasnt implying anything either way. When I was your age I felt alot worse than I do now in my 40's. That post about age was about me wonderin if I'm one of the older guys on here. A reality check for myself !

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: question about a well

I'll tell ya a short story bout well pullin, comical now when I look back on it. Some of this may help you. When I wAs in my early twentys I bought my first home. Just an old farmhouse, nuttin fancy. So all of a sudden the well quits workin! 3 kids and a wife-no water. No problem I say, I remember pullin wells wit my dad as a boy.I'll just round up a couple buddys and get er done I tell the wife. Now this is a relatively new well bout 5 years old I think. So me n cuple buddys get some beer and gear together and start to work, we cant budge this thang for nuttin! Try harder, into the night we work thinkin if we can just get it started it'll come out. Worked all night drank all the beer, no luck ! One guy says I Know lets tie to it, andpull the rope over a barrel with the truck, ok good thinkin buddy lets try it, annnnnnt no luck that way. This is a good example of how head strong we can be when were young and broke ! Ha Ha ! We cracked the top of the casing pullin at an angle with the truck. Well its gettin toward mornin and one guy has to go so that leaves 2 of us. I tell the remaining guy to go home get some sleep and we'll figure it out later.Im gona call my dad I tell him and get some advice! After daylight I call the old man and explain the situation, I'm really expectin dad will have the answer because I remember pullin wells wit him growin up. Dad tells me to just call a local well man and save yurself alot of trouble, well thats not what I wanted to hear so me and the one buddy get back at it. Rested now and with last nights mishaps behind us were ready to whip its but now! At that time I think I was bout 24 years old and if I set my mind to sumpin it was gona happen Be damned! Be damned ! So this time we figure if we get an engine hoist right over top the case we can pull straight up on it and it just has to go, and once we get it started we'll be in the clear ! So here we go , we tryed for hours and hours to pull that damn well, all day and clear into the night again. I called all my young buddys to get their expert advice but in the end nuttin worked ?! Finally after 2 full days, (my whole weekend) I break down an call the local well man. He's an old man, clean cut, wrinkled and weathered skin, not much for talkin he just quietly walked around my mess lookin at things while I explained to him everything Id tryed for the last 2 days. I noticed he did have a kinda small grin on his face. He had seen my 3 kids on the porch all in diapers and my young wife. Finally he broke down laughin right in my front yard, after a bit he put his hand on my shoulder and said son, you cant pull this well, its 600 ft deep and plumbed with 10 ft sections of pvc ! You'd pull yur nutts off tryin to lift that !!!! Well long story short, after he pulled himself together he backed his boom truck up to the well ,pulled 600 ft by himself in about 10 min. He repaired the burnt wire got me all fixed up and agreed that I could pay him the $250.00 on my next payday,He was laughin as he left ! Growin up I watched my dad do bout everything hisself cause we had no money, I followed the same way, I can now build my own houses, fix my own cars , just about anything I need done, but I have learned that at times you are better off to just hire it out ! If you wanna pull it then go for it, but dont waste 2 days on it and find out how deep it is first ! Good luck

rueben just mentioned terrain, where I hunt its all timbered hills that are normally open, with very thick clearcuts all over that are extremely thick ! crawl thru thick, because I hunt daytime I am usually around these clearcuts. I have never caught a hog in anything open here. Maybe if my dogs would hunt at night I could find some hogs in open timber but if they dont catch it right there it would surely make it into the thick stuff !

Reat, I was in GA a few weeks ago and had bout 6 dogs on a hog , they were in real thick brush on top of a hill, 2 of us busted buf up there but they went silent. A minute later fight breaks out at bottom of same hill so we run back down, their caught in a deep ditch ! one man jumps in, kills hog and we start tyin off dogs, I realize my joe dog is not here so I step out to listen and hear him bayin way way off. Run as hRd as I can 1000 yds or so and Joe has a big boar stopped on the edge of a swamp, he's circleing the hog and has had him there for 5-10 min. My buddy Nik had been there the whole time watching, he didnt have a gun or bulldog so he just watched. Fortunately one of the bulldogs followed me and as soon as I got there the 2 dogs caught the hog. Nik said every time the hog tried to run my birddog was biting him and keepin him there. It would not have gone down that way here at home, that hog woulda been 2 miles out and still pickin up speed !

I agree 100percent ! Catch it at the jump or its all over with. You just described every place in Ohio. Very frustrating to say the least, the worst part about this for me is that there are no easier hogs around, big or small they run like deer.Ive had em blowout from 150 - 200 yds on the run just because they smelled me. Like tryin to sneek up within reach of a bedded deer.I am looking for the straight catch type dog I started with.
