HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Sow down!

Met up with some hunting buddy of ours tonight to try out a new spot of theirs. However, we had ran our "first stringers" the night before so we gave them the night off and seized the opportunity to work some of our pups. We dropped dogs jack, buddy, lady, yeller and made a sweep through some cedar breaks and on up to a few ponds. After approaching the ponds, jack and buddy strike a boar who takes them on the scenic route through the property before shaking them. So we pick the dogs up and move to the other end of the property drop them on some tracks and jack and buddy immediately strike a sounder about 175 yds out, pups right behind them. We release the catch dogs and seal the deal! Sow down! Sow Joe and Rudolph with dogs Jack and Buddy Dad (RedneckRob) Me with pups Yeller and Lady

My dad (RedneckRob) and I met up with a few friends of ours for a quick afternoon hunt. We drop dogs Sooner, Ellie, Jack, Flash, Little girl, and Cowboy. After a half hour or so picking up no sign the dogs (Flash and Ellie) strike on a decent boar about 300yds out! They get him stopped at the edge of a creek long enough for Sooner and Jack to arrive and help out. Meanwhile, while we're walking the CD in the boar decides to make a swim for it so Sooner and Jack take it upon themselves to seal the deal! We arrive on scene to see the two cur dogs (sooner/jack) in the water battling it out with this big boy but in control of the situation, so in we go leg the hog pull the dogs and its a done deal! Fun Hunt Guys!!!

if they stay on the road while hunting then I think the best/easiest answer would be to simply park get out and head off into the woods on foot, get them to go into the woods with you, they outta follow you and eventually go off on their own. Hell I get hollered at occasionally because I park the 4wheeler and get off and next thing you know im 5 6 700yds away just lookin, its nice to get out off the beaten path once in a while. See if that will help, I'm not much for draggin a pig around in the woods for more "mock" hunts, if they know what they are lookin for then maybe just try usherin em towards places you think the hogs may be hidin off the roads.
X2. It just takes time, they're still young. Take them out every chance you get and remember "they're young" so don't get upset and give up on them just keep workin them and they'll turn on.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: I'm interested to know

I prefer "A" but we have both in our yard. Really just depends on the size of the hog whether or not our strike dogs catch before the CD gets there.
So... I'm going with A (sorry pops!)

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Sunday afternoon hunt

Me, my pops (RedneckRob), and bro in law Alex (HogTamales) set out on an afternoon hunt at a new spot we recently acquired. The Land owner told us we ought to drop the dogs in his back corner and work up the creek toward a thicket filled with honeysuckle said "if they're anywhere they're in there." So we drop dogs Sooner, Ellie along with our RCD's Charley and Babygirl and head up creek toward thicket. Dogs working good for an hour or so hitting every cold trail they pick up but not striking on anything but with as much sign as there was I knew it'd only be a matter of time before they struck. So with the wind blowing like crazy in our favor we head back down creek backtracking on our way back in the direction of the truck. We get about 500 yds away from the truck when Sooner and Ellie open up on a sounder 75 yds away from us!!! The RCD's head in to seal the deal and just before they can get there the sounder breaks! Pigs shooting out in all directions confusing our RCD's on which one they should grab. Meanwhile Sooner and Ellie cross the creek hot on the rear of a big sow and shoat! We manage to call off one of our catch dogs in pursuit and get him heading with us in their direction. We finally find a crossing point on the creek and start heading their way. I check the garmin to see how far out they were, and they've stopped them at about 0.6 mi from where they had first struck. We finally arrive within 150 yds and the baying stops! Now I'm thinking they broke bay, but as we top the rise we see Sooner and Ellie off in the distance. So we head over to them to find a shoat (55-60 lbs) :/ they had caught. Yes momma got away but I'm sure we'll run across her again in the future.
