1  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Lol enough dogs to take down a bear!! on: May 09, 2012, 12:55:31 pm
I know that I give my dogs real good, high quality feed and plenty of rest between hunts, they are well taken care of and in awesome condition during my hard hunting season. I also know that at weigh in for the TDHA hunt I put two dogs inside of plastic kennels so that no body would see how bad they sucked down while bustin their humps for me in that comp! I had one gyp perfectly well muscled on Friday night, who was showing half her ribs and hips Sunday afternoon

I agree!

Let's have you go run 12 miles 3-4 times a week threw briars, palmettos, flag ponds and see how u look LOL. I know there are some ppl out there that don't feed enough and there dogs look poor. This guy said he had been hunting a tourney I could only imagine how much those dogs ran. Like someone Opreviously stated some dogs are just built that way no matter how much wormer or feed your using. My vet always told me the most important thing is just keeping them hydrated if not there coat gets dry and rough and they have stuff around there eyes. All those dogs look a little whipped but overall good health.
2  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Standard American Bulldogs on: May 07, 2012, 02:38:36 pm
Don Matthews is a good friend of mine and magnuml's. My dog came from Don off of the Spider dog mentioned above by Peachcreek. Don has a lot of good working blood. You should check out Konfederate Kennels if you get in the market for a good bulldog!

X2 Don is a good guy with some proven working dogs. I'm an APBT man myself but my hunting partner is Am Bulldogs all the way. He is close friends with Don and everything from his yard goes back to Konfederate Kennels. I would recommend his dogs to anyone looking for a proven line of Am Bulldogs.

3  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Getting a dog to turn on for a new owner... on: May 07, 2012, 02:21:24 pm
I had this same thing happen to me. I tried everything in the book. Penning her up with my lead dog, getting them comfortable in yard with rest of pack, dog treats, TLC, anything and everything. That's when I learned some dogs will not hunt for everyone no matter what you do. I have seen a common theme with Catahoulas they are a one person owner. I ended up having to cull the dog in the long run. I hope u have better luck then me!  Good Luck
4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: How long do yall keep a pup before culling on: May 07, 2012, 11:54:39 am
I think once you have a pup start early that's just a natural it sets the bar for your other pups in the future. Once I saw an 8mo old pup strike n bay a hog alone in the woods at night I wanted all my other pups to follow at that age or I don't want them. Time is money ESP with dogs. I realize not all pups are naturals but that's why you Cull hard.

Experiences vary greatly on this topic with no wrong answers only personal experiences.

My experience has been the good ones start and end being good.
Have never been a fan of the "waiting on the pup to turn on"  either they are turned on or they are not.
I like the pups that naturally go crazy the very first time they lay eyes on a hog ......extremely high prey drive.

Few folks dont mind waiting for years for a dog to "turn on"  but I dont have deep enough pockets to feed one nor the willingness to maintain a tool that isn't being utilized and so far hasn't made the effort to make itself worth feeding.

Same expectations and requirements.  DONT BEG THEM TO DO THEIR JOBS just find another that will.  Wink

Good luck  Smiley

Couldn't of said it any better myself! I feel the exact same way. I show my pups a pig at 3-4months and see how they do from there I do staged hunts and drags for practice. At 8mo old they better be running with the big dogs. I expect at a year old to be running and striking hogs alone or with an older dog. I understand different breeds and bloodlines mature later but that's not for me. I had a Parker and culled him at 7months most ppl told me that's to early to cull one of these "Parker dogs" that they mature late and really hit there stride at 2-3yrs old. To me that is way to long to be waiting on a dog when there are plenty out there running and baying at a year old. No disrespect to the Parker dogs just using them as an example.
6  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: catch dog cull rate... percentages of present day dogs and dogs of the past... on: May 07, 2012, 09:34:11 am
I think everybody's opinion of a catch dog is different. Just because it catches does not guarntee it won't be a cull. They might have bad manners, or animal aggressive. I noticed that neither of the dogs you just posted came from proven bloodlines where both parents were catchdogs and there grandparents were catchdogs. I recently bred my Rocky dog to a bigger female to add a little size the pups were catching at 3 months old. It just came natural to them it's in there blood. I agree people have watered the APBT blood down and I can't speak on the caliber of dogs in the 80's at the pound I was young then  Afro I still think the key to avoiding any culls catchdog or strike dog is proven bloodlines. If you want a good strike dog or mtn cur you wouldn't go shopping at the pound you would go to a proven breeder/hunter. The same applies for a well bred catchdog.

But to answer your question no doubt there is many more culls now a days then back in the 80's. People breed for color and head size not drive and performance. Also another idea to toss around, How many of those bulldogs at the pound were fight dog culls.Huh?Huh?? The rules and standards for keeping a dog at the pound or humane society has changed quite a bit. They run behavior and social tests on the dogs now a days before putting them up for sell. I think this has a big part to do with it.

7  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Your ideal catch dog... specifics please... on: May 06, 2012, 02:05:59 pm
I like a fast 50lb red nose APBT with a good handle. This is my Rocky dog he is 53lbs soaking wet. I bred him last year to a bigger APBT gyp (65lbs) that my friend owns to add a little more size. This is my top pick Bear all the pups are catching pigs and shoats at 4mo old. I have seen some gritty curs and ppl use 3-4 dogs to catch 1 hog that's not my preference. It seems you get more cut up dogs that way. I have also seen some really good 1/2 Cur 1/2 Bulldog with great handle and all the brains you could ask for but in a bad spot with a rank hog they would "Cur Out" I think that's a chance u stand when crossing them. Find a nice Dogo female to cross your male too. From my understanding everything u just described could be found in a good Dogo. JMO

Also I went and got the Kennel Cough shot at TSC it was $7.50 a shot and u give it threw the nose. Pretty easy and simple. Good luck!!!!

Also I know it's air born but my vet told me if a dog is very cold, hungry, or real weak there more susceptible to get it just like a human and the Flu
13  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Kennel couhh on: April 17, 2012, 03:47:37 pm
Ya it sucks!!!  Angry  Everyone of mine and my partners dogs spread it around for about 2 weeks. I used Robitussin like I stated above and within a week it was gone. The dog who got it the worst for some reason was my inside dog. It took him longer to get rid of it too. My buddy hunted one of his and the next day it was gone. He told me the cold night air helped it but I'm not sure he might be full of $hit LOL.
14  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Kennel couhh on: April 16, 2012, 07:32:24 pm
How old are the pups? I use Robitussin cough and cold for dogs older then 8mo. Same dose for people's and animals follow instructions on box. If it is not better in a few days go to vet, it can get bad and SPREAD FAST!!!! keep dogs isolated food n water bowls.

15  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Who breeds Parker Curs on: April 16, 2012, 11:58:21 am
I'm just curious how many people on this board have a finished Parker? And how does it hunt???

I had one Parker and he was a cull but I respect Larry as a dog man and a man of his word. I have a half Parker coming this summer I hope it will work out. I'm not sure they have a higher percentage to be long range tons of bottom dogs, then any other breed out there. It just boils down to what you like or prefer. I have seen some good Parker dogs and alot of bad ones just like Cats, Kemmers, BMC. I think Larry might have even better dogs if he actually hunted his gyps but what do I know LOL I own a bunch of no name culls that stumble across a hog once in awhile.
16  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Dang Palmettos!!! on: April 06, 2012, 10:25:25 am
Some have been started.. The one i kept hasnt.  he still has ALOT of puppy in him.  His three brothers ive kept up with are all making hands though.  one is in tally now with the FSU mascot, when he left he had found and caught one (with other dogs), one is making a catch dog, has a decent nose but catchin is his calling i think.  The other is already finding and bayin his own and will catch with another.  I think my mistake was keepin one pup and getting the GF another.  They seem to feed off each other, and even when run seperate just wanna play with the other dogs

I hunt with Drake once in awhile, last time he had a real gritty blue heeler cross is this one of the pups from you?? I know he had a few other pups at home too.
17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Puppy Paradise! (Post em if ya got em) on: April 02, 2012, 03:13:15 pm

Great looking pups  Grin I have heard about Joe how is the gyp bred? How does she hunt?
20  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Few pics! on: March 16, 2012, 10:17:15 am
Not bad for a Florida boy  Grin   Good huntin' brother!

What's that Maverick dog off of?  Some of my young dogs got a real similar look to em...

Thanks!

He's a FL cur/BMC. The Fl cur comes from some real old stock around okeechobee and the BMC is a registered dog from down there too. Real rangey dead silent dogs with some bottom. All those yellow dogs and Maverick came from the same blood. For being a year old he is doin real well. Azn
