HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Winter Dog Houses

Over the years I have worked on winter housing for my dogs, and wanted to share this here for anyone it might help to take better care of their dogs in the cold. I use a standard plastic barrel, built up a pad so they are a little higher than the ground. I drill a couple holes at the back of the barrel and stake them down with re-bar facing south. Then cover with dirt, 3 feet in the back and sides at least a foot on top. Fill with straw or coastal hay. Going to add some type of canvas door flap as soon as I can get some material but worked great as is. First true test last couple days. Blizzard up here in the panhandle. 24 plus hours of winds 30-60 mph out of the north, ice pellets and snow most of the time. Wind chills zero and below last 24 hrs. Dogs were real quiet all night with gusts to 60 all night. When I checked this morning they were warm to the touch and in great shape. This did not cost much to do, but you do need a front loader if your doing very many. I have been taking care of hunting dogs for a very long time and this works better than anything I have ever tried. Thanks, Paul T

I have bred and hunted, 1/2 and 1/4 Plott x Catahoulas, Plott blood came from big game pack in NewMexico. Crossed to my cow dog bred Catahoulas with lots of hunt and style. All have been silent, most are rough. Outstanding hog dogs, cast, rig, or road them.

cat or bmc with pit can be good as long as the dogs are bred to hunt and not to just work cattle...
Reuben, curious as to why you have this thinking about the "cow dog" blood. Why would dogs bred for cow work not hunt? In my opinion, and experience, the job description and working ability of a cow bred cur type dog is at a much higher level than the average hog dog. And they should have all the hunt of a hog dog. On the topic at hand, I tried this type of cross years ago, Catahoula, Plott, Pit, bred and selected for four or five generations. I produced many nice dogs and one outstanding female that is still alive and with a friend, but I culled the whole line except for her. Lack of holding style and dog aggression that showed up at 4-5 yrs old. I stuck with the straight proven cow dogs and never looked back other than to keep a few 1/2 or 1/4 Plott dogs for when I dont have to work the next day.

I breed tight two or three generation, then outcross to one of two types of dog. Outside blood that's tight bred or an outcross dog from my line. If I like the results I breed tight again from there. A female provides only 50% of the genes but truly great females are a true treasure. Personally I don't think line breeding is an end unto it's self but a way to produce THE outcross dog that can be bred to most any solid producer to produce high percentage, high quality litters.

Thin skin dissipates heat from the body quicker than thick skin. Also circumference of bone does not necessarily directly correlate with bone density, and therefore strength. The most important thing about bone in a dog is that the bone lengths are in the correct ratio to each other to produce speed, lateral dexterity, and soundness.

She has a pretty good nose jsh, usually very dry here so winding is her style, but will take a hot track. She is Stag with a little Bull dog in her.

Finder holders, yea they really are the deal. The most efficient dogs I hunt.
They have nothing in common with RCD's different beast entirely.
Black Streak, I know him, good man, solid dogman, his dogs? Top notch.
There are many good finder holders working in Texas, proven dogs, proven style..... To question that is really kinda silly and for the uneducated.
Cheers, Paul T

Depends on what your catch or holding dogs are, the type of country you are hunting, and how hot it is. I do it all the time.

I have got a couple of lawyers going through these changes, as well as my self. Will have it picked apart in a day or two. Not everything in these proposed changes is bad for us. I will have a list of proposed changes that need to be made as well who to contact, if anyone is interested.
Thanks Paul T

I like your pup, I think her style is spot on. She stays up front with some crouch and wants to engage on the brake. Good luck with her she's a nice one.
