Ben and Terry, the smurf dog I have left will sure enough take a beating and stick on one as long as it takes. He isn't the hardest hunting dog, which I attribute mostly to a rough, dry start but he'll find one and get the job done.

I have a little dog right now that hunts well and if there are hogs around she will find and stick with them. I have the same problem though. If a hog wants to leave her she won't try to stop it. I've watched her solo on a 60 lb hog crossing a pasture. The hog was just trotting away and she was right behind it letting it walk. I picked up some well bred stock dogs to put an end to that nonsense and it has made all the difference. She has a place here until my young dogs start finding consistently...

I guess if I had to put a number on it then I'd agree with wildchild. I don't see anything wrong with a short to medium range dog if they stay busy. I've caught plenty of hogs behind that type of dog. As far as long range goes I love a dog that will get gone and hunt out as far as it needs to find a hog. That being said I see a lot of people talking about their long range dogs that just run a straight line until they cross a track or run half a mile before they start hunting. In my opinion a "long range" dog that will get out there isn't worth a thing unless they hunt from your feet out.

Why bother telling the world that your gonna break the law if your dogs do? Do whatever you gotta do, but there's no need to talk about it on the Internet.
This was the first thought to cross my mind before this thread every had a response. Why tell the world that you blatantly intend to break the law?

I have always liked early starters but most of my dogs don't do much until a year old. I have always looked at them as dog years compared to people. At a year old they should be doing about like a 8 year old kid. At 2, a 16 year old. They better have it together by then or they need culled.
Yes sir... I agree. I judge a dog between age 1 and 2... anything under 2 I call a pup. I'm in this boat as well Mr. Nash we talked about this the other day and Terry you know where mine are at right now. I'm right there with yall on this one.

There are culls in any family of dogs but as whole that is a solid line of dogs. I have been lucky enough to hunt behind a handful of them and have a few of my own. Every grown dog i have seen out of that line are long range with plenty of hunt, nose, bottom, grit and stock sense. They don't come much better in my opinion.

i've hunted with lisa and ginger and have to agree . i've never met clay hurst but have penned and caught cattle with his daddy and he is a top notch cowboy , dog man and feller !
the best cowdog i ever worked behind was clues cowboy , sire to lisa , and maybe ginger , i can't remember. if he had been a hog dog he would have been the best hog dog i ever seen .
John, Lisa and Ginger are both Cowboy x Sarah, just different litters. A year apart I believe.

I've had the pleasure of hunting behind some real nice dogs owned by different people but I can't say that I've seen that one super dog yet that just stood above the rest. The dogs that I enjoyed hunting behind the most so far were BigO's Lisa, now owned by BigBen and BigBen's Ginger. Those two dogs just seemed to compliment each other very well. Both have plenty of hunt, nose, bottom and can flat move a track. The first time I hunted behind them was the first time I really got to see well bred stock dogs work and I have been sold on them ever since.

I've got a small one that I send to the bay solo on a regular basis and he hasn't let me down yet. I try to see the bay or at least be within 40-60 yards so that I'm always right behind him.
