3  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Need to cut back on: May 07, 2014, 07:19:02 pm
I have a 1 year old gyp for sale.  Was told she I s 3/4 mountain cur 1/4 walker.  She is started in pen and been on a few mock hunts.  So far not real gritty and ranges out good.  Should make a good dog, just don't have kennel space for her due to being given some good finished dogs and pups by a good friend.  $150 OBO.  If you buy her and don't like her I'll give your money back when you bring the dog back.  Also have a 2 yo 1/2 Florida cur gyp.  She stays busy and has winded quite a few hogs and caught a few shoats by herself with limited hunting.  Not gritty.   She just doesn't have enough drive to be consistent enough for me.  She was given to me as a pup, so she is free.  I also have a 1 yo catahoula/cur cross gyp that is started.  She bays tight and is pretty gritty.  She listens well just hunts too close range for me.  She is $50.  Text is preferred but calls before 9 pm are ok.  9792031458.  bdawson@pinecove.com

5  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Any hog farmers out there on: January 29, 2014, 09:32:17 pm
Not a ton of experience with feral hogs but have raised a lot of domestic hogs and 2 is usually all I got with 9 as the average litter size.  I did recently catch four sows in the trap and 2 had pigs before I moved them.  One litter of 6 and the other 11.  The babies are a couple weeks old now.  Got them in a pen with a boar, but he's gonna have to go before they breed back.

I would start baiting some hogs up and start taking them dogs there. And if they bay one pretty quick make it break and let them run and bay that's good for young dogs

Thanks Bo, I'll do that while I look for a bulldog.

Thanks for the input.  They were a little timid but worked their way closer just wanted to see what you guys on here think.  It seems like they were looking to me for help but I wasn't sure how to help them.  I am still green and wanted to tap into the wealth of knowledge on here so I don't screwup what I think are some young dogs that could be pretty decent.
10  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Need advice on: January 26, 2014, 08:48:28 pm
So I have some young dogs (around a year old) that I started baying in a pen on a 50# hog.  A couple are looser baying and a couple bay pretty tight.  I was planning on staking a hog out and letting them track and find him today, but got busy so I figured it could wait until tomorrow.  I took them out today in the woods to let them just get a little exercise and work their nose a little.  My cur gyp acted like she was winding something and took off then dropped her nose with another dog right behind her.  A couple minutes later I hear them baying (I figured a dillo) as we weren't in any sign.  As I walked up on them the other 2 dogs showed up and I dang near crapped my pants.  They were baying a big boar (200+).  He broke and they ran him down about 800 yards and bayed a little longer.  Then a couple tried to get catchy and got rolled up pretty good.  The boar broke again but I was able to catch all the dogs and ease back to the truck.  I don 't have any finished dogs, not even a catch dog yet.  I am in the process of trying to either train one or buy one.  My question is what should my next step be with these bay dogs.  Still go ahead and stake some smaller hogs out a couple times or go ahead and get their confidence back up a little or hurry up and find/make a catch dog and start hunting?  I know I made some mistakes today and will not make them again, but any opinions or insight to help would be appreciated.

14  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Need advice on training pups with a scent drag. on: January 20, 2014, 01:08:19 pm
Just wanted to get some advice from some of the veterans on the best method to train young dogs to make strike dogs.  Should I use a live hog or a hide?  Hobble them or snare them? What is the best way to secure them at the end of the trail?  How far should I drag them?  Any advice would be much appreciated.
15  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Started dogs and one pup for sale on: April 08, 2013, 03:57:55 pm
I've got a black 1 year old Florida Cur gyp that is just started.  She will bay in the pen and has only been to the woods once and was at bay.  Will catch after another dog initiates catch but is not a gritty dog.  I have a few 1/2 BMC 1/4 Cat 1/4 Lacy pups that have been started.  They are about 9 months old.  Two are semi-gritty and one is very gritty.  I also have a 1/2 pit 1/2 lacy gyp for sale.  Her Mom is full pit and a good catch dog.  Dad is full lacy and a finished strike dog that has found 100s of hogs.  These dogs are not culls.  They are out of good stock; I just don't have time to hunt right now.  Make me an offer on any or all of these dogs.  I'm located in Ellinger, TX.  Text with questions or for pics @ 979.203.1458.  Email @ bdawson@pinecove.com.  Thanks!
16  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Fl cur x Geat Dane on: January 05, 2013, 04:57:33 am
I have two littermate Fla cur x Dane from an accidental breeding that came out of my best gyp.  One is a red blocky headed male and the gyp is black and leggy.  They are both tight baying semi gritty with a fairly cold nose.   I started them at 4 months and they started kinda slow which I figured might happen with the Dane in them.  They are 10 months now and striking their own hogs already.  Mine are big and tend to hunt big open country better than small brushy places.  The black gyp drug a 75 pound hog out of a wild rose hedge for me just the other night though.  They seem to be very intelligent.  I'm considering breeding the gyp if she makes a top dog like I think she will.  That's myexperience with a Fla cur x Dane anyway.
