I know a lot of guys are pretty scared to go in close but a ton of these old timers would do some tight breeds, then outcross it a little bit after. It doesn’t take much genetic variability to keep the species thriving.

Yes, I’d say there are a few culls, but most of em have made good hog dogs! I’d be really interested to hear some stories from some of these old timers

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Old line Black Mouth Curs

Just curious here. We have some older line black mouth cur dogs out of the original Re Taylor dogs. Any of you guys hunting these lines? I hear the names Clue Anderson, Ben Jordan, Bo Nutting, and Bob Owens a lot in my line of dogs.... wanting to hear who all has some of these lines and how they hunt for you. Cow dogs, hog dogs, don’t matter to me.

Rednose: talking sight hounds or lurchers, (really like the thought of 1/2 stag 1/2 border collie; then cross that with full bmc. Gain some brains and athleticism without losing the baying genetics of the bmc.... just thinking out loud really. Hope someone on here has done this to ask about. Saw a guy on another forum crossing lurchers and July’s for bobcat dogs. Thought it was pretty interesting.

That’s interesting mike, you have much more experience and my evidence is mostly anecdotal. I appreciate the reply, sounds like the couple dogs I had it happen to maybe just didn’t really have enough bottom to begin with (which is a definite possibility) I assumed it was from the tone but I could def be wrong.

I’m definitely more familiar with hounds, have hunted around plotts and walkers and have owned a few, but something with a lurcher cross like (border collie, staghound) might just add closing speed... really just kind of interested in the athleticism that those dogs have and wonder if a little intelligence from the collie might help balance that out. Do those triggs have some running dog in em? Only met a couple guys that have those

I do tone train my dogs, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to do a lot once the race is on

MIKE, I think I’d haveta disagree with you, I do believe toning a dog off of a pig once they are on it will definitely affect their bottom over time, seen it happen, they just drop outta the race once they have hit that range. Not saying it doesn’t for ur’s but I think it would for most dogs

Y’all ever add a smidge of running dog into your curs or hounds? It seems like those dogs have a lot of motor to em and I’m wondering what that would do to there ranging out & bottom once the started chasing one. I’ve never really been around any stag hounds or rcd’s and I wouldn’t want enough in my bmc’s that it would increase the likelyhood of being catchy. But enough for a little more leg and running ability. Any thoughts? Concerns? Recommendations?
