61  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Tuesday morning in the snow on: January 23, 2025, 06:55:19 pm
I got out with some new friends Tuesday morning, man it was 10* when I left the house. We get to the spot, let the dogs out and start walking towards the area. There was a mountain they have good luck at, we get in there and most of the dogs go out for a bit but come back except two. About 5 minutes goes by and we hear a couple distant barks.

A couple minutes more go by and the whole woods shook to life with a thunder I had never heard before. Those dogs brought a herd of hogs to bay at the base of that mountain and they were all grunting and letting us know how much they did not appreciate being disturbed. The dogs got a boar locked down (about 120lb) and the rest of the herd ran up the mountain.

We dispatched boar number one and start up the hill, the dogs had a big sow caught (about 150+) and we get her taken care of. It’s early and the guys want to go hit another spot up the road. We get almost to the parking spot and the dogs dip into the woods nearby, we wait a bit and my male Jagdterrier starts barking. I told them we might see a deer or an armadillo, well all the other dogs fell in and bayed, we get in there, catch dog makes contact, he makes a move to escape but doesn’t get far.

Dogs got him pinned up against a deadfall tree, first guy gets him legged up and stuck. Ended up being a boar close to 200 with those dog killer teeth,  only one dog got a poke under the chin that was fixed easy enough. It was a great morning, with some new friends.

We got 8” of white stuff here in southern OK, I hope it all melts in the next couple days. The last of the deer season is over on Wednesday. Glad you made it safely WoW

That’s a great looking set up NLA, one of the nicer ones I’ve seen.

A brother from church let me know he’s got a new spot for us to hog hunt, he gets the tour and the rules from the owner. Rule number one, no dogs.

So we take our lemons and head out last night, it’s a farm on the banks of the Wanumber 2a River. We ride around stopping to scan with the thermal from time to time, after not seeing anything we head to a barn to set up to do some calling, thinking maybe get some coyotes.

No sooner we get all set, I spy a group of hogs feeding along the edge of the pasture. Ewe make out way close enough to where I feel I can make a good shot, the first shot hit with a thump and she drops in her tracks screaming, the rest scatter. In the ensuing chaos we manage another one right through the lungs.

Anyhow, that’s how we made lemonade out of lemons last night. Catching them with dogs is always my favorite way to hunt hogs, and it was really a blessing to be allowed to hunt on such a nice piece of property. Hope you all have a great New Year.

Beauty and beast in one package, nice job Cajun.

That Robber dog is a looker, if he hunts half as good as he looks he’s certainly a keeper. And those catch dogs look all business. That’s quite the adventure ducking the lightning and trying to get the dogs back and not get swept away in a flood. We got rain all day yesterday, it was what we needed after all the dry months.

Cajun, I like your style, you remind me, of me.

Man I hate hearing all these bad reports, I’m I going to order some batteries for my tt-15 mini’s and keep on getting it. My tt-15’s (full size) haven’t been any trouble as of yet, I’ll keep using them until they die on me.

I have two 100’s and I have a habit of running whatever I have till the wheels fall off. I did see one of the newer units here locally a rabbit hunter was using. Not gonna lie, the screen graphics and updating seemed a lot nicer than the 100.

My guess is those pups will be some rough as cob running catch dogs.

Than you Cajun, that pic does not disappoint.

Cajun my interest in plotts got peeked again recently after listening to a couple of podcasts. One of the hunters is a Cuban guy in Georgia and the other is Bob Plott, both guys had a wealth of information. I’d like to see more pics of the dog in that pic, i really like his looks.

The only plott I had I got from Star Mountain in the mid 90’s, young gyp. I tried to make her a coon dog. I wish she turned out better, the one thing she could do was smash a coon by herself. She lacked in the track, trail and treeing departments unfortunately.

Good results in tough conditions, the clay soil here is so dry I’ve got cracks a car could fall into in my yard.

Definitely showed those blokes a good time, you guys wracked up a good body count on the hogs too.
I sure think we did. We wore them hogs out. Make sure you get with Thomas on you coming back next year. We will get together and make a run around us.

A little update, when I built the dog box for my truck 7 years ago I just used some barrel bolts. Well they wore out and weren’t working so well anymore, so I ordered two more of the spring pin latches. I had to cut and grind the old ones off and make some brackets to mount the new latch pins on. Took the dogs out this morning and the doors stayed closed the whole way and back.

Stop laughing at my welding, I’ve got feelings you know.

Also t dog, I put wood filler and fiberglass resin on the plywood top for the buggy cage. Pics to follow.
