1  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Lately on: March 26, 2024, 10:53:11 am
They’ve been doing good, they got the idea, just waiting on them to put it all together.

Had a little fun the other morning. Grandpa has a place just north of Flatonia the hogs are real sporadic on, had a boar on camera early morning after some heavy rain and went and tried him about 9 am. Trailed him about 2 miles north and run out of country, sent dogs back south when I picked them up off the county road, they go every step of the way back to where I first cast them and found a coyote with an old snare on him willing to fight. 3 vs 1 did not work out in his favor. Pups first time to ever see one and they were sold out. Probably number 8 or 10 ive caught/bayed with sketch over the years.

Been hunting a little bit lately. Been doing alright between me solo and once with my buddy Tim. Boar was from today solo. Sketch spoon and Misty trailed him 600 off a feeder at about 1:30. I broke him walking in and they took him 800 to the next creek bottom and set him up. 10.5 month old spoon and Misty are really trying. Lots of go, have em over half a mile just casting with and without sketch often. Proud of em for that hog, he was a pretty salty one and they were really jammin on him.

This sow was number 4 of the morning the other day. Just me solo. Struck 5 caught 4. Lost my phone going in to the 1st. Just so happened to bay the 3rd back in the same Mott and crawled over my phone on way out. Pups done good after it took a while to get in the hogs. The 1 hog we got beat by Misty was trailing solo and she come off to go to sketch bayed. watched her cross a right of way behind it. If somebody wanted to talk about rose hedge and briars. I’d bring them to this place. It’s sucks to half to go in to. 4 was all I wanted to catch by then.

The other Friday with Tim. Caught 5 sows. Finally found a boar we guess on 6 cause he finally beat the dogs, and left his mark on a few. Nothing major. Got to swap lots of young dogs around throughout the day. They done good. Lots of trailing done that day. We got in to a group finally early lunch but they were on their feet moving when we found them after the first hog about 11am.

Another morning solo sketch and pups trailed as far as a mile out and probably a total length of close to 2.5 miles in about 1.5 hours and finally bayed this sow that has pigs on her. That was a pretty good track job to watch.

3  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Age old topic: To Breed or Not to breed? on: February 11, 2024, 09:29:24 am
BA-IV, I would consider that a concession as well. If he was mine and I was gonna breed to him, then I would breed him to a gyp that didn’t have enough bite. In my experience, you have to breed to the extreme to get the desired effects. So he’s got too much bite and if you breed him to a female that has that right bite, then your likely going to get more pups with too much bite still. If you breed him to the gyp that doesn’t have enough bite then you get a little closer to the desired effect…usually. Obviously there isn’t an exact formula or guarantee or this would be easy. I’ve tried doing it the same thing with the size of my catch dogs. It’s worked more times than not.

I would concur on this. Actually just did this last year. Picked up a young yella dog named shaw, put him through the ringer and he made a dog pretty quick. He was just ROUGH, which is exactly what I wanted. Sketch doesn’t have enough bite. She isn’t going to bite a hog and make him face her. She is by no means a “make them bay” kind of dog. She’s more of a “let the em bay” dog if that makes sense. So bred her to shaw with the idea of the 2 extremes hopefully landing me somewhere in between with the pups. We shall see.

I like the way that was worded, about the difference in making excuses vs concessions. I think it’s 100% right. It’s the difference in why they couldn’t get the job done, vs what they got the job done in spite of.
I think at the very least every mans benchmark for breeding working animals of any sort, and certainly dogs. Can it get the job done alone at a high clip? If it needs help, or mitigated circumstances and variables to be successful, it ain’t the kind of animal i want a kennel full of, so why would I breed it?
It’s a way too high percentage of people in my opinion breeding dogs that have no idea what they’re actually feeding/breeding because they’ve never taken a single dog on their yard solo and really watched and paid attention to what the dog does and is.

The words “riding to them”  has me jealous. Haven’t gotten to go hunting horse back in some time. Sounds like the dogs had it on their mind.

Oh, and me her Misty and spoon went and killed 2 more boars yesterday evening behind my house. And for the first time spoon and Misty both were there from the start of the track to the strike, right in mommas hip pocket. They had a rally going for a little till a steer that was pretty stirred up because he was on the wrong side of the fence broke em up. They put 2 boars up together after that and we got em both killed. Shot the bigger one, they all took the other maybe 200 yards and stood on his head.

Sketch rolled on a big boy after them 2 and took him about a mile and put him up.

Sadly it’s a terrible spot we get beat by big hogs in there probably twice a year because you can’t get in there to the dogs. Decades old pile of bulldozed cedars in a big ring and it’s all grown back up with hard woods. Had to tone her off after he broke out of there and I had realized I lost my phone and was about out of daylight. Maybe next time.

You've got a good thing going Slim the proof is in the puddin. That old Gyp has done you right.
I really appreciate that, and She sure has sir. She’s been a pleasure to own and hunt, and I couldn’t do enough for her to even the score when it comes to what she’s done for me.
Besides all the hogs and coyotes and cows we’ve chased together, and the couple dozen pups she’s weaned and showed the way for me and friends. I’ve gone to that dog a hundred times when my head was a mess over something. Whether it’s been a solo trip to the woods or a ride in the truck or the few nights she’s spent at the foot of my bed. She’s helped me find center every time. For that, she’s been a once in a lifetime dog.

I hate to think of the day she isn’t atleast around anymore, the times I have, I really haven’t been able to decide if I’ll be able to go on with the dogs. Just ain’t a way it will be the same with out her, though it would be a shame to let everything she will leave behind go to waste.
There used to be a day I didn’t really respect a dog, like a good one should be. Not that I didn’t want to but I didn’t really know how or what it meant. Sketch and the late Mr.Jamie Woodward taught me how.
Love that dang leopard gyp

I went solo Thursday Friday and Saturday last week. Found hogs everywhere we went. Killed a few and missed a few we should have gotten killed. My 9 month old pups got to see their first few rallies and it was a learning curve. Killed 7 between Thursday and Saturday, nothing much picture worthy.

We had like 18” of rain in about a 12 day span so all my bottom country is flooded and hogs are scattered. Saturday missed a big boar sketch and Misty walked an impressive washed out track to on a big creek that was level bank and rolling. He jumped in when I walked in and was gone in about 3 seconds. Thankfully I kept sketch and Misty from trying it with him.

Sunday I wanted to end on a high note so me and tim got together and headed to the prairie. Navidad river bottom country. Took getting in to the third place before we got around anything fresh. Sketch went and put a 150 lb boar up that really had running on his mind but they bounced him up and down the river a few times and he finally bayed in some bad briars on the bank. After that we casted off a feeder and a bunch of the young dogs made a hell of a deer race lol. Teaching moment. Sketch walked the river for about 30-45 minutes out to 3/4 mile or so before we reeled it back in and fell bayed in a bend at about 600. Went a grabbed the youngins and then sent them to her and went. We broke it walking in and I broke one of her hips down from across the river. She sat up pretty quick after that and we decided to let them dogs really bay, and that they did. Sat there watching for over an hour before we went and got a rope to catch her and take her to my house for some other young dogs to see. 3 dogs under a year and none of them ever walked out of that bay in over an hours time. We were real pleased with that. Got a pretty good video out of it too. All in all a good weekend and we got some pups really going the right way.

Good stuff t dog. I used to not be a huge fan of them big group hunts, these days I love it. Hang out, tell reride stories and just have an all around good time in the woods. Even sweeter when dogs put you on a couple hogs.

That’s awesome. I wish more of you legends would tell about your dogs and the history y’all have with and know about them. I love to hear about where the dogs were at when you started with them and where they are now and the road taken to get here. Lots of knowledge in you guys. The unfortunate truth for future dog men and women is that one day we all will meet our maker and we can choose to either share that knowledge and wisdom or take it with us. In my opinion, if we truly love the dogs and ways we use them, we are obligated to share so that others can continue it on hopefully. Thanks for sharing, I know some don’t because they’re worried about being considered a know it all. The ones that think that about someone that is talking with sense aren’t to be worried about anyway.

You ain’t kidding thomas. I wish there were more of these guys that were more accessible and willing to share their stories. I idolize these old men. maybe more than one should, but dang it I can’t find a overall better example of good humans and resourceful, respectable men, than the vast majority of the old school cowboys and dog men. sadly I lost the only one I was close to last year in Mr.Woodward. That man shared everything he could with me, and then allowed me to form my own opinion and run with it.

Sure appreciate you Mr.Anderson, and the few other old heads on here that are willing to share. Love reading the stories and lessons learned and seeing the pictures of some real deal working dogs.

Thomas, yessir she is pretty dang small. I call her my micro mini cur.  It sure the deal there, her brother I got is polar opposite. Most people probably guess he got some hound to him. She’s built pretty good in my opinion but just pint size lol. Don’t believe she’s going to be, but my only worry would be her being slow for what I like.

Pretty short and sweet story. Let dogs out of their pens this afternoon about 2:00pm to let them run around a little while I cut some firewood by the house.

2:15 I saw them headed into the bottom pasture about 800 yards away. 2:25 I hear barking, figured spoon and Misty were being pups and bayed on some cows. Get down there to realize they’re all the way in the bottom behind the big house, bayed in the brush. Sketch, spoon, Misty, and Remmy, my JRT. Had a pretty good guess it was a hog at that point.

Walked in and sure enough had about 140 lb boar bayed in his bed. Videod and watched for a little bit then headed to go get lizzo from the house. 2:48 I was leading her in to catch him. 2:56 I had lizzo tied back and was petting on Spoon and Misty for staying hooked and doing a good job.

Got back to house and got to wondering just how far that was. Pulled up onX, they went .91 miles
to him. Spoon got a pretty good little muscle cut under his front leg. Nothing serious, didn’t hardly bleed but he will be sore in the morning. He took it like a champ. Took 10 minutes to get them called out of that dead hog. They keep at it they might fully retire their momma this year.

Picture of Misty on a buddy of mines horse couple days ago. She’s a confident little gyp and I like it.  Will have to get a good picture of Jake Spoon.

Yes sir, Big flood plain right through there along walkers branch. Keeps underbrush knocked out pretty good. We got our bad spots in the blackland country just like everywhere does.

Woke up New Year’s Eve and was scrolling through Facebook. Memory popped up me and a buddy went behind my house last year and killed a heck of a boar. Decided to go see if his little brother was hanging around this year.
Carried grandma sketch, her 2 8 month old pups spoon and Misty. And my greyhound Lizzo for catch power.

Casted them a direction we don’t normally go these days below the cow pens into a dry branch. 10 minutes sketch spoon and Misty were standing on one’s head at 380.

Me and lizzo go to em. As I’m coming on them I had to get a laugh at my little shorty jack russel, Remmy, he was in the baying with the big dogs. I haven’t had him but for a few months and the only other hog or 2 he’s seen in a trailer he didn’t care much about. I see the hog looking right at
me straight ahead 15 yards so I send lizzo.

Should be easy catch. Or I thought so until she hit and I come blowing in there to realize she’s now getting jumped by maybe 4-5 other hogs i never saw. Had us a pretty good rodeo going for about 45 seconds. Finally dust settled, little spoon got one singled and went to baying and about the time the rest were joining in, lizzo swallowed an ear and was hooked up for good.

Took me forever and a day it seemed to kill him. Grabbed wrong knife out of our bag walking out of the house. Got him knocked down none the less and couldn’t have been prouder. Lizzo first hunt back since trying to breed her 4 months ago. Spoon and Misty first ever hog in the woods and they showed me all I could have asked to see. Even remmy getting in the mix was awesome as he was bulldog caught when i legged the hog lmao. All in all good way to finish year and excited for the new one.

Lost guero to the fm road about 1/2 mile from the house. Always something with these sketch pups. Christmas eve eve I took spoon and Misty and sketch down to the bottom behind my house and casted them. 8 months old First time for them to be collared and sent “hunting”. They left like some 3 year olds off the flatbed right behind sketch. They made it about 400 with sketch and split off. Any track spoon comes across, he’s gonna tell you and everything else in the woods about it. Lmao.  His style, how he travels, and trail’s, to me is way more “houndy” than what these leopard dogs typically are. Misty is tighter mouthed. Only barks if she can see what she’s chasing. They chastised a deer or 2 and then a few cows. Let em run for an hour. Only went to go get them off the cow. https://vimeo.com/897899726

Gathered them back after sketch returned from the neighbors. Went to other end of the branch and casted them behind the working pens. They drop down in to the branch go about 300 and stand something up. It broke in short burst a couple of times 50 yards or so. Away then back. Away then back. Kept waiting to hear a coyote howl as I suspected that’s what they had come across. Though that never came. I waited a little to long to grab Lizzo and head to them. They broke south(only big hogs run that way in the past) and race was on. Picked them up about a mile down the branch where it crosses the road. No hog to be had, but they did as good as I could have asked for that being first time out. https://vimeo.com/897899966 now we wait for 3rd weekend of January.

any broken bones muscle ligament or tendon tears use BCP 157, its amazing w/ the injuries like that in dogs and humans. Its not cheap but cheaper than a vet bill and will regrow things normal vets md's etc say are permanent or need surgery, theres tons of info on line about it, I dont sell it at my office but reccomend it and am amazed at the stuff it heals
Little bit of reading has me really intrigued with my sketch dog having severed that Achilles’ tendon a few years ago. We fixed it best we could and for the first year or 2 it was probably 85% of what it was. These days I can tell it’s starting to slack up and cause her some discomfort and really slowing her down. She’s working on getting retired but if I can get one more spring out of her I could sure use it. I got some coming in the mail. Will report back.
