21  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / NYE 23 on: January 02, 2024, 08:47:25 am
Woke up New Year’s Eve and was scrolling through Facebook. Memory popped up me and a buddy went behind my house last year and killed a heck of a boar. Decided to go see if his little brother was hanging around this year.
Carried grandma sketch, her 2 8 month old pups spoon and Misty. And my greyhound Lizzo for catch power.

Casted them a direction we don’t normally go these days below the cow pens into a dry branch. 10 minutes sketch spoon and Misty were standing on one’s head at 380.

Me and lizzo go to em. As I’m coming on them I had to get a laugh at my little shorty jack russel, Remmy, he was in the baying with the big dogs. I haven’t had him but for a few months and the only other hog or 2 he’s seen in a trailer he didn’t care much about. I see the hog looking right at
me straight ahead 15 yards so I send lizzo.

Should be easy catch. Or I thought so until she hit and I come blowing in there to realize she’s now getting jumped by maybe 4-5 other hogs i never saw. Had us a pretty good rodeo going for about 45 seconds. Finally dust settled, little spoon got one singled and went to baying and about the time the rest were joining in, lizzo swallowed an ear and was hooked up for good.

Took me forever and a day it seemed to kill him. Grabbed wrong knife out of our bag walking out of the house. Got him knocked down none the less and couldn’t have been prouder. Lizzo first hunt back since trying to breed her 4 months ago. Spoon and Misty first ever hog in the woods and they showed me all I could have asked to see. Even remmy getting in the mix was awesome as he was bulldog caught when i legged the hog lmao. All in all good way to finish year and excited for the new one.

I tell you what, those easy handling dogs will sure spoil you. It’s real hard not to like’em, heck sometimes it’s to a fault.

What this guy said haha. I like dogs that are easy to keep and have.

Lost guero to the fm road about 1/2 mile from the house. Always something with these sketch pups. Christmas eve eve I took spoon and Misty and sketch down to the bottom behind my house and casted them. 8 months old First time for them to be collared and sent “hunting”. They left like some 3 year olds off the flatbed right behind sketch. They made it about 400 with sketch and split off. Any track spoon comes across, he’s gonna tell you and everything else in the woods about it. Lmao.  His style, how he travels, and trail’s, to me is way more “houndy” than what these leopard dogs typically are. Misty is tighter mouthed. Only barks if she can see what she’s chasing. They chastised a deer or 2 and then a few cows. Let em run for an hour. Only went to go get them off the cow. https://vimeo.com/897899726

Gathered them back after sketch returned from the neighbors. Went to other end of the branch and casted them behind the working pens. They drop down in to the branch go about 300 and stand something up. It broke in short burst a couple of times 50 yards or so. Away then back. Away then back. Kept waiting to hear a coyote howl as I suspected that’s what they had come across. Though that never came. I waited a little to long to grab Lizzo and head to them. They broke south(only big hogs run that way in the past) and race was on. Picked them up about a mile down the branch where it crosses the road. No hog to be had, but they did as good as I could have asked for that being first time out. https://vimeo.com/897899966 now we wait for 3rd weekend of January.

any broken bones muscle ligament or tendon tears use BCP 157, its amazing w/ the injuries like that in dogs and humans. Its not cheap but cheaper than a vet bill and will regrow things normal vets md's etc say are permanent or need surgery, theres tons of info on line about it, I dont sell it at my office but reccomend it and am amazed at the stuff it heals
Little bit of reading has me really intrigued with my sketch dog having severed that Achilles’ tendon a few years ago. We fixed it best we could and for the first year or 2 it was probably 85% of what it was. These days I can tell it’s starting to slack up and cause her some discomfort and really slowing her down. She’s working on getting retired but if I can get one more spring out of her I could sure use it. I got some coming in the mail. Will report back.

From what I’ve seen from sportmix. I wouldn’t feed it to catfish.

My buddy Lero is feeding it up there in grimes county. He likes it. Value pak goes up another $2 a bag they can kiss my broke behind and I’ll look to change to it if I can find it.

Hold over the link and click open in browser thomas. Or atleast that makes it work for me. If I just click the link it won’t open it.

For any of the older crowd on here that was on here 10+ years ago. That JRT shorty in that video I just picked up from Mr. James and Clayton Hollub over here in schulenburg. Him and another had gotten after the neighbors cat and needed a new home so I went and got them.

Here’s same link copied from internet and not the Vimeo app. Maybe this works. https://vimeo.com/875015711

Anybody else hearing rumblings about new hog bait LSU has been working on? I’ve found some articles but not much info on it of course. I got it on good word it’s being trialed along the Brazos at some of A&Ms research fields Outside BC/S.

just getting out in this heat is a task much less catching one. nice
That’s no kidding. We braved is Sunday morning and had a 10 year old dog get pretty hot on us. Ended up okay. I was sweated wet after we barred one. Dogs producing right now have to really drive a track, good deal.

Well
The picture popped up after I replied. So I guess he isn’t a bird dog, at least not full anyway. He might be one of those poacher dogs. He might be trying to sneak around. Maybe tell him next time you cast him that y’all have permission to be there and he’ll probably bay out loud.

Thomas that’s the double bred son of sketch I’ve posted about my buddy having down south that’s making a pretty nice dog.

This is me trying a new way to upload vids. But if it works watch both the catch dogs cross at the last second and go for off side ear from where their easy shot would have been.

Thanks guys. Theres A couple videos I put in beginning of post. Idk if any are working for y’all other than the sunrise video. I have to hold over the link and click “open in browser”. Someone mentioned roaches cut. Truthfully I think that was barbwire, regardless no doubt. That’s a bad spot to get anything more than what he got. Most them cur dogs are getting up there in years. 1 over 10. 4 of em over 6 and 2 2 year olds.

Some of those pictures are from my photographer friend. She had come again the other weekend with us. Didn’t get much as we didn’t get in to hogs until after 11. Caught 3 off of one bay and called it.
