81  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Gator ate? on: July 31, 2016, 11:30:11 am
Lost communication with a dog the other night, think he might have gotten gator ate. Anyone got experience with this, Garmin lost coms completely and the dog with him came back skidish. I went to where we lost coms and it was gator infested but I figured I could get coms with the dog but nothing. I had a DC40 fully charged on him and never heard a bark or nothing the whole time it went down. This was about .73 miles from camp and then the next morning the lost coms was about .81 miles but into a swampy area that was deep. I just thought the garmin would at least still communicate with the handheld. Lost a good dog and a collar  Angry

My one eyed cur catches no problem, they will adjust. Just make sure it does not get infected because it can spread behind the eye and cause some real bad issues. Won't hurt to have 2 catch dogs or another gritty dog that will help. Good luck.

I only train one puppy at a time and only hunt one puppy at a time. When you buddy them up with a experience rangy dog in a pen and let them hunt with them they tend to leave your feet and range. Most of our curs won't turn on until 12-18 months, but some are ready to roll 7-9 months. My breaking point is the 18-24 months. The first years I ran into the same issue, but know that my pack is strong it's easier to get a dog going how I like. It's growing pains for sure. What really stinks, is when you give the dog to a buddy and he starts turning it on for them......  Wink

I do not have a pen to use, so I just buddy them up with a experienced dog in the dog pen and send them in the woods. It takes a while but they eventually catch on. I have seen dogs bay great in a pen then see them regress in the woods. But if I had a pen I would tease them a few times a week and make them want it more then let them bay. In the past 3 years hog hog doggin, I have learned to must have patience. Everything takes time, but keep working hard at it and it will come.
85  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Dog Agression on: January 19, 2016, 02:07:09 pm
Didn't matter he would fight male or female, I hunt with a group and I don't want to risk him killing another dog. I had high hopes for him, but I guess that hunting.
86  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Dog Agression on: January 19, 2016, 10:59:59 am
I recently had to get rid of my 10 month old cracker cur. He was in a pen with a non aggressive seasoned hound until 9 months when he start fighting. I started him on hogs at 7 months in the woods not a pen. Very calm and friendly puppy, once he hit 9 months old he starts jumping on dogs (around the time I start sending him to bays to catch with the other curs). I spent time with him, he handled good, taught him how to swim, and would correct him every time he start a fight with my tritronic system in the box. Unfortunately, I gave him away because he would fight in the pen, box, and started fighting at and away from the box. Did I just draw a bad card? I have raised several curs and never had one I could not break from aggression. He was turning it on to be a great hog dog, just burns me up I had to part with him. Anyone ever experience this? Any suggestions going forward?

Bo, thanks for the response. Just curious what are you crossing them with?

I take it not many people run jagds? Like to hear what some veterans have to say? Grin

Forgive me if this thread is a duplicate. I am interested in the Jagd Terrier breed. My question is, who is actively hunting with Jagd terriers and how are they working for you? I am only interested in hearing from the folks that have them in there pack and would like actual insight  how you a working the dogs? Casting, road hunt, etc.... I hunt areas with shoulder height restrictions in Florida and would like to cut down on the feed bill, lol. I currently use cracker curs and hounds crosses and never had to have a bulldog due to really rough curs. Any information would be great or could you direct me please. Thanks.

Mike,

I have received mix reviews on the Alpha, I could understand those who do not update not getting good range out of them. I just don't want to make the switch if the range sucks. You are not the first person who has said they get more range out of the unit. Seriously thinking about biting the bullet after the holidays. Thanks for the info.

Yes, I agree. I have learned a lot the past three years and know there is much more to be learned. I haven't started breeding yet but I plan on next year if everything goes as planned. I was hoping my cracker cur gyp and BMCxredbone cross would make some goods ones. I also have some good cracker cur males to breed to also.

Really didn't understand these concepts about casting until my third year. Wish I had watched this video when I first started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGkdlpIxWbY

Thanks for the info, I grew up on a grey hound farm. From our experience it was always to risky hunting them because they break limbs so easily. But never really thought of crossing one.

From my experience my cracker curs are find and hold, sometimes they will bay a large hog 300lb range until they here us walking in and then it's on, but they are straight find and hold otherwise. What are stags? I hunt north Florida not familiar with them.
97  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Alpha vs Astro 320 on: October 16, 2015, 10:00:59 am
Thanks, guys. I was under the impression the range was better with alpha. I have the tritronic trasher breaker pro which works great. Just thought I wouldn't lose signal like I do with the astro at the mile mark. I use extended range antenna and the magnet you put on the roof. I am sure they will come out with something new and better.
98  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Alpha vs Astro 320 on: October 15, 2015, 10:58:51 am
Looking to make the switch to the alpha. I thought the range was much better compared to Astro 320 but have heard of people saying the Astro was better after the switch was made. Anyone have experience with this?
99  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: For the ones that have hog dogs on: October 14, 2015, 06:32:02 pm
New to the forum, been hunting for 3 years now, I hunt in North Florida swamps on the gulf coast. I started with cracker curs and now have added hounds. All my curs are gritty and will catch up to a 300lb hog at this point so no need for a bull dog. It's really thick and swampy where I hunt and in Dixie County and they run hounds like it's going out of style. We use to hunt WMA areas and thought we had great dogs, but got put in place once we started running in hound country at a private club. So now I run a mix of curs and hounds, we use to walk curs into thick sign but that wasn't real hog hunting and now we cast and do much better. I say we usually catch a hog or two a month, I just love hunting and being out in the woods. Nice to see what other weekend warriors are doing.
