641  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Shep x Cur, who’s done it and has something to say about it on: December 26, 2019, 03:55:42 pm
I have absolutely no experience with this, but I would suggest strongly looking at the Malinois that you select. The ones the military use are typically not from America from what I’ve heard/seen, (although I may be thinking of German Shepherds not Belgian Malinois) but they are tested extensively and one of the tests is will they hold on to a person while that person is beating on them trying to make them let go. I have read some posts from a guy that works them as well as hog dogs (his name is calicatchers on instagram, great page to check out) and he has posted before about how it takes a very hard dog to go under a house or in a room and hold a grown man after the dog has been beaten or even shot. In special operations it’s not unheard of to have a dog kill someone. Some of the SOF dogs have multiple kills from clearing houses. I would do a lot of digging to try and find a dog off of those lines

That’s crazy goose, what caused that head injury? It’s strange that two dogs can have such different reactions to pain, same as people. I’ve seen people that cry like a baby over anything and then I’ve seen dudes that broke their back and didn’t realize it for months

Been a hard year for me and my hunting partner. He’s lost a few dogs that were starting to come on good, and I lost my lead dog and catch dog just recently. He called me last night to tell me his bulldog Patches passed away. He had a cyst on his testicles, vet looked at it and said it wasn’t cancerous, gave him antibiotics and said they might have to neuter him. Well we hunted the weekend before last and killed a small boar. It poked up a few of the dogs, nothing too bad. Zach went out to give patches a piece of bacon he had just finished off that pig and found him on the chain, already gone. Said his gums were white so I thought maybe there was some internal bleeding that we didn’t know about. Then he saw that the cyst had a small area where it looked like it ruptured, so not sure exactly what happened. He was Zach’s first dog, you could hunt him solo and he would find and catch his own pigs. He was smart, if he was by himself he wasn’t suicidal and would backup if he was getting cut up but with other dogs on the ground he was a dependable catch dog.

I gotcha, it sounded like he bred some real nice dogs. I remember reading a post he had about the first two dogs that he ever got that were the foundation for his breeding. Maybe one day he’ll hop on here again

Does anybody know what he’s up to these days? I always enjoyed reading his posts, I saw he hasn’t been active since 2018. I know he always blacked out his face in pictures for work so I figured he is an operator or in another government agency like the CIA. Hopefully he is doing well. I don’t think I ever talked to him much on here, but liked reading his thoughts on breeding and was interested in his straight catch project.

Slim, I agree with you on feeding every other day. I’m away from the house a lot and my wife works crazy shifts so most of the time I double feed them so that I can skip a day. The dogs don’t miss a beat and look the exact same. There’s only about once or twice a week that I single feed them, if that, and they’re fine. It’s similar to just leaving food out 24/7, some of the dogs will eat it over the two days instead of eating it at one time.

I’m now down to only 5 dogs after getting rid of a female, getting rid of pups, and losing Dum Dum and Thorn. This is how my feeding breaks down per day...

My Female pit x cur : 2 cups

Her 3/4 pit x 1/4 cur : 2 cups

My two cur pups from Justin : 4 cups

My male Ladner BMC : 3 cups

I change how much I feed based on how the dogs are looking. If they thin down from running hard I’ll bump it up. If it’s winter I’ll bump it up so they stay warm, and if it’s summer I’ll adjust feeding as needed to keep them in good running shape. I always feed pups/young dogs more. I had pups from the same litter as a friend, I poured the food to them and gave them good puppy food. He fed all of his dogs together so pups got to eat after grown dogs so they didn’t get as much. And they were on standard dog food. My pups were twice the size of his after a few months. Now with that being said once they hit about a year old they were all about the same. But I think pups need more food to properly grow, just like a child. I also like to give young dogs raw meat when I can because of the same reasons. I feel they need all the nutrients they can get.

Also when I adjust food I do it in half cup increments, that seems to work well with my dogs. And when I say a cup I’m talking about an actual measuring cup for cooking.

T-dog, do you change your protein/fat throughout the year or do you feed the same bag?

Man that sounds like a fun hunt T-dog! Our corn goat season doesn’t end until January 1st, so we are still watching the clock for some of our land lol.

Cheston, I haven’t used the specific bag but I’m using pride. I switched from the red bag of victor (high energy 24/20) because it was costing $43/40lb bag. Now I feed the orange bag of pride (27/20) and it’s only $26/50lb bag. The dogs look just as good and they perform great on it. Good stools too, they’re dark and solid. Other than that I occasionally feed a raw meal, which will consist of random hog parts. I’ll freeze the pigs and then chop them up with an axe and separate bone, meat, organs, etc... and then make each dog a bowl with a ratio of each part, obviously meat being the main ingredient.

T-dog, thanks for all that info. I was under the impression that high protein food actually helps against heat stroke, I read it on here a while ago. I didn’t know that too much protein could actually cause a heat stroke and didn’t know it could lead to weakened bones. Great knowledge to pass around.

Those are nice trailers Reuben, I was looking at them a while back... they seem to be very heavy duty.

Absolutely Justin, I’m hoping that they will be heavy started before I come down again. Then I’ll bring them with me to hunt them with the rest of the family lol. Like we talked about, I’m going to try and increase pig size. A lot of that just depends on what my buddy gets in his trap but hopefully he’ll get some that are a good size. I’m curious to see how the male does with catching a bigger pig.

Thanks rednose, I’m itching for deer season to be over. That will open up the spot that is going to be the best place I have to start them. Once I’m able to take them out to that lease I will be able to work them a lot more than I am now

660  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Who bred your dogs? on: December 02, 2019, 10:14:43 am
I’ve only bought dogs, but I hope to change that soon. I have tried to learn as much as I can from people on this board, and try to be a student of dogs and hunting. My end goal is to breed a line of dogs that work for me and the few people I hunt with. My two pups I have now are the only line bred dogs I’ve ever had so I’m hoping that they will be a good foundation for me to start with.
