1  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Good cross? on: December 05, 2023, 07:15:31 pm
I honestly quit woods hunting years back and pretty much got out of dogs but of course when something is a true passion you’ll find your way back. I’m playing with these pen dogs at the moment as it works better for the kids and I enjoy the company of the bay pen folks. The biggest problem I see with a lot of different animals is no one proves their brood stock out and culls accordingly. I understand the cost .. time and energy that went into it but a cull is a cull and your goal is to produce a working animal and or improve your stock. We as humans are to willing to make excuses as to why we should keep them and overlook the faults we aren’t happy with. We don’t have to rely on them to eat or work or make a paycheck like they did when most were created. The other big problem I see is geographic differences. Just because someone breeds a great line of dogs and has maintained them for several years doesn’t mean you’re going to get a pup and take it to a different geographic and make a dog. They work so well for that breeder because they perfected them for where they hunt and how they hunt. If you are in the market for a pup I would look for a person or breeder that hunts the same geographic you do and pretty close to the same way you do. Just because they didn’t make a dog for you doesn’t give you the right to bash a breeder because there is so many variables that go into making a dog and as you pointed out the lack of hunting land and access to land will eventually be the death of more then one breed or line of dogs and to be honest that’s the exact reason I stepped away. Truthfully for me to woods hunt like I believe a dog should be I’d have to make trips out of state to have the access you would need. It just doesn’t exist where I live in Florida or access is not available unless you were born into the family.

Buddy of mine owns world champion goose. Strictly a bay pen dog. He is now a 5X and will be trying for 6 starting in about a month. When he realized what he truly had he made the same cross again and again and again and again  trying to get more. He’s produced some great dogs and I don’t know his percentages and what not but there’s still only 1 goose. I know when we had running hounds we liked to use uncles aunts and cousins to keep a line going. Tons of ways to go about it and the closer the cross is a good way to see the bad faults just as much as the good. Some lines can take an extreme amount of close breeding and some simply just can not. In game chickens it’s pretty common to breed an old cock to a young pullet or a young stag to an old hen. They seem to not produce as well the more they age and using something old with something young seems to help. Tons of different animals peds to study to see how the rest of the world tries to reproduce something .. hounds .. bird dogs .. game dogs .. race horses .. game chickens the one thing most all of them have in common is they are judged on performance and the ones that are more successful are completely performance based

Start doing some research on the lines winning in the pens. The southeastern US is stacked. The Carolina’s more so than any other state. I always liked the “east coast” and “Hellums” bred hounds. Good track running hounds that burn up the deer woods. Don’t look at dogs in the speed and drive look at hounds dominating the 3 days. Fox hounds guys play the numbers like the greyhound guys. They breed plenty of pups. There’s a forum just for running hounds. They don’t post much in the forum but the classifieds stay full
4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Redbone Coonhounds for pigs good or bad? on: May 23, 2021, 02:43:37 pm
It’s almost not fair to say redbone for me because he was 50/50 redbone/American bulldog but I will say this I had him and one of my curs I bred and those were by far hands down the best dogs I ever owned and I was sadly still a teenager when I owned these and didn’t truly know what I had back then. My redbone barked the first hog he had ever saw and was silent from then on but that SOB caught harder then any bulldog I ever owned. I got called a liar many times for saying how he was bred until you got to hunt behind him. He looked 120% redbone but caught 120% bulldog.. he absolutely had the best of both worlds and I’ve wanted another one since I lost him but I’ve been to scared I’ll never duplicate him so I’ve never tried and never owned a redbone since him

Hey warrent do you know of anyone with the old white dogs?? So what’s everyone’s take on color of the American bulldog?? I’ve noticed the trend going to more color. I prefer the white but yes mine is brindle patched. But that’s what the misses picked. I would have picked all white. The biggest problem I see with the bulldog is there wind. Could that be improved with time and better breeding ??
8  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 29, 2020, 07:46:52 am

These are mine sir and dam. I had a deposit on a different breeding but she didn’t take I believe. I’m pretty pleased with him so far. I just looked at his puppy papers he’s 10 months. I honestly don’t know I’ll be able to let him catch a hog now I would have to cull the misses if something happened to that damn dog. Haha but I honestly think he would take right to it and I think his wind could be built to my satisfaction. I can tell you know don’t rough house the misses if he’s out. Haha I really got him because I’ve always had an interest since I was a kid but they were clearly out of reach and last year I was getting pups for my chicken yard and she started to try and take to some and I had to educate her a little that it wasn’t a good idea to start liking them yet. So I talked her into a bulldog and I would let her have it in the house. Now I would like to add a few more and keep a line going as I know multiple people that would dang sure use one but are like me most of my life. Couldn’t justify the $$$ well I’m not getting any younger and the breeders aren’t either so I bit the bullet. Your going to have to pay to play. My biggest thing would be though I want the same dogs anchoring hogs or rank cows to be the dogs that can get the wins to national champion. But you have to have a sight and a plan or really what’s the purpose!?!?

I never said it couldn’t be done and knowledge I just wasn’t aware of. I’m sure it was more common in days past more so then today’s times. But that’s really with a lot of animals and not just these. So are the average cost of a pup roughly what you would expect to pay calling a bigger breeder ?? Just being curious I don’t need an exact number blasted. Good to know I could have researched a little harder and found more options for stock.

Good looking pups for sure. You said there close to a year ?? Sorry I can’t remember off the top of my head ... I think you would want that drive there long before now. Where abouts are you located ??
11  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 28, 2020, 05:43:53 pm
Sorry for the dumb question but what magazine do you speak of? I love reading the old magazine. So much knowledge is lost with every generation that leaves us. I have hoards of old magazines wish I had the room to go threw them all and organize the way I would like..... hell before you know it it will be hard to find an all white dog the way I see some headed now. I just wish you could go to a show ring and those dogs be the same one we use to get our job done but they are really 2 separate worlds no matter how good a sales men the breeder is.
12  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Still learning: Florida cracker curs on: July 28, 2020, 03:26:01 pm
I can understand. I get on a few forums and that’s the extent of my social media. I’ll look back and see what I can find and I appreciate it. I reckon you would call it SW. bred born and raised in manatee county. My dad and uncle were born down around devils garden. That’s were my granddad made a living riding a horse until he changed up to a semi because grandma wasn’t going to live in the sticks any longer!!! Most of us are from manatee and wachula with some from around the lake. There last name is choat < could have spelled that wrong. I’m 3rd generation to hunt the bombing range and my dad lives in highlands these days. Funny you say that about them ole white dogs most wouldn’t believe you and why I say you get the “sport” that pops out every now and again and only one a litter. Well I would say your one of the few left and few left with what I picture when I think a FL cur. Wouldn’t mind picking your knowledge one day.
13  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 28, 2020, 10:57:57 am
I’ll have to see if I can’t find someone with social media. I don’t do the whole social media stuff. I get on a few forums and that’s the extent of my socialness. I appreciate the responses gentlemen. Are you fellers out towards the west ??
14  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Still learning: Florida cracker curs on: July 28, 2020, 10:52:22 am
I could post some pics for you if you would like. I can PM you my number but I will try and search back. Where abouts are you in FL roughly ??
15  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 27, 2020, 09:05:03 pm
Use postimages. It a better host and I think much simpler for pics on forums
16  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Still learning: Florida cracker curs on: July 27, 2020, 05:45:56 pm
Man just by that pic that looks like more fun then a couple fellers could handle. ...... it would be hard to put a list together really and I’m a little different with my likings then most...things I like ... trainability... common sense... one man band type ... use of there nose ... willingness to please ... grit etc etc ... some things I don’t like hard headed ... overly people friendly ... food aggressive... bad pen manners ... dog or animal aggressive Not respecting a pen or fence  etc etc but you have to be easy on the eyes too I prefer females so the males are already a step behind
17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Still learning: Florida cracker curs on: July 27, 2020, 05:32:58 pm
Well stated warrent!!! What you describe is what I’ve always known a FL cur to be. I wish I had the ability to start some on cows because there normally seems to be a mix that some take better to a cow and some take better to a hog and the greats do what they are expected and asked. Hell some work cows by day and catch hogs by night. Seems you have some of the good ones for sure. Do you breed often or have pics of what your using now ?? Thanks in advance
18  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 27, 2020, 05:21:48 pm
TNT you didn’t mention what line yours were ?? Thanks in advance
19  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: American Bulldogs on: July 26, 2020, 02:23:33 pm
TNT what are you using ?? If he doesn’t work out it’s not a big deal for me because he is doing exactly what I got him for and the misses loves him to death. I myself have always been curious how many of these big breeders still have what a bulldog is suppose to be or have they shifted so much to the show ring most are no longer what they should be. So he is my first in trying to figure that out and if not well I reckon the misses has one hell of an expensive lap dog.  I have a few things I already don’t like about him and something I was also curious about there over all health in general or is the pool so small in some types those issues are going to be there.

Less then a year. I’d have to find his paperwork to know for sure but still squats to pee as you can tell. Solid 70# right now and still growing
