2  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Few thoughts on the cow dog/hog dog correlation.... on: May 27, 2009, 10:32:45 am
A dog that is out of a line of dogs that will find cattle in the woods, bay and catch them will make an excellent hog dog everytime, will have a handle better than most and will usually be a strong, working dog with a good nose and range.  call scott aka realdogs and ask him what tj is doing in texas and what he thinks of this line of florida cur cow dogs.  Tj is as good as it gets.  I've got his full sister, she's as good as it gets.  They are long range early starting rough bay dogs that shut down hogs.  They are pure florida cur cow dog stock.
3  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Few thoughts on the cow dog/hog dog correlation.... on: May 25, 2009, 03:09:57 pm
I tested my first litter of florida cur cow dogs when scott (realdogs) came down and bought a few pups from me.  At 3 months old we took them to a pen full of shoats, put them in the pen and they went to catching.  Scott took two pups and said both made excellent hog dogs in texas, one was killed and one is TJ, still alive.  I sold the rest of that litter and all made dogs.  I went back and got a few more of the same cross.  The cowboy told me he used his dogs to find cattle in the woods and bring them out.  He said they were too gritty, one has 3 legs, most are pretty banged up.  The male and female I have now are straight up strike dogs that will shut a hog down and not even a year old yet.  They have a great nose and will track and wind and roll out deep.  They are real smart.  You can see crackerc hunts the partin line and his monkey dog is a real hog dog.  The cowboys move the cows in a group and when one breaks and runs the dogs bring it back. A lot of these make great hog dogs.  I'm mainly focusing on the lines that are used to hunt woods cows in the woods.  I promise you I can take any dog that will find a cow in the woods and either bay it or catch it and turn that dog into a hog dog every time.  You can ask scott aka realdogs what kind of dog TJ is on those texas hogs.  A lot of the cowboys use catahoulas and blackmouths on cows too and a lot of them will make good hog dogs.  I'm not talking about a bay pen dog.  I wouldn't feed one of those.
4  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Just Starting out on: May 24, 2009, 08:45:57 pm
I would say go hunting with someone that hunts hounds, then go with someone that hunts curs, I would start off with one or the other.  One good strike and bay dog and a catchdog is all you need to start off with.  I wouldn't start off with rcd find and catch type dogs until you've been hunting a while.  The pace is faster and its a little bloodier type of hunt.
5  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: RCD or CD? on: May 24, 2009, 08:13:15 pm
When I first started hog hunting I hunted with michelle mears in south florida.  Every dog she owned would find its own hog and catch it by itself.  She believed that every hog on her lease was a runner and would not bay up at all.  She had dogo/cat crosses, pit/cat crosses, straight pit, blackmouth curs, all straight find and catch.  We caught no less than 3 hogs a day when I went with her.  A lot of the hogs got chewed up and a lot of the dogs got cut but we were catching hogs.  A friend of mine named wayne has some of her bloodline and hunts the same way.  He always says we're not baying hogs we're catching hogs.    I've had several that were find and catch, a lab/pit and a straight pit, both had good noses and would shut a hog down.  I like the bay and being able to walk in and watch the bay.  I also like not having my dogs get cut.  If I was competition hunting or hunting for a living or had to eat what I caught I would only have dogs that would find their own hog and catch it.  If their is no bay then the dogs have a lot less chance to break or get away.  The australians have known this for a long time, just go on boardogs.com
6  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: What kind of RCD .....? on: May 24, 2009, 08:01:56 pm
I had a lab/pit that was jam up and I've got a straight pit now thats hunting hard and straight catch.  I'd love to see somebody breed a pointer/bulldog/stag cross.  I think that would be similar to the bull arabs out in australia.

8  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Stopping running hogs on: May 20, 2009, 07:51:46 am
You're going to have to go with some bird/bull crosses, or anything, cur, hound or bulldog, that will go out, find its own hog and catch by itself.  Not gritty, not put teeth on it, catch on sight and be silent.  Do not have a single dog in your pack that will bay or do anything but catch.  Michelle Mears use to call these enduro dogs, dogo/catahoula crosses, pit/leopard crosses and foundation bmc's that were straight catch is all she had.  The problem will be finding some that aren't dog aggressive that are strike dogs and won't hang around your feet.  You'll have to buy them finished or go through quite a few pups to get to the real strike and catch dogs.   You will have to suit them up and you will have some extra cuts but you'll catch every hog in that block.  The best one I've ever had like this was a lab/pit cross, would stay gone for an hour and you'd better be listening for hog grunts and pig squeals.
9  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Re: finished kemmer cur on: May 19, 2009, 09:01:55 pm
The sire and dam to this female are dead.  You can see their pictures on hinch mountain big game kemmers website, dixie and yellow jack 3.   The dogs in both of these pedigrees are the top dogs in the kemmer world.  This dog is as good a looking dog as they come, as fast as they come, easy breeder, for someone that wishes to breed, hunt and sell top kemmers this is the one.
10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Training dual purpose dogs on: May 19, 2009, 08:23:33 pm
I think dogs that work cows actually make better hog dogs.  It's like playing pro football.  Once you learn to handle faster, bigger, stronger guys, if you were to go back to college you could easily handle those players.  Cows, bulls, etc are bigger, stronger, and a dog has to mentally prepare himself to handle this big animal.  Once he goes back to a smaller hog, no problem.
11  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / finished kemmer cur on: May 18, 2009, 07:44:25 pm
Hinch Mountain Yellow Rose,  finished yellow bobtail kemmer female born 7/24/07.  This dog was baying at 4 months old and striking hogs at 6 months old.  She has found, trailed, bayed and helped catch over 100 hogs.  Sire and dam pics can be seen on hinch mountain big game kemmers website.  Sire is Yellow Jack 3 and dam is Hinch Mountain Dixie.  Completely open, will run an old track.  Produces the same.  Currently with pups, as soon as their weaned will be for sale, 2500, and pic of litter.  Will also come with finished catch dog.   Might consider partial trades on 4 wheelers, tracking systems, etc.  For the serious hog hunter and kemmer breeder.    Call sean in florida   352-328-8354
12  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: STARTING PUPS! on: May 17, 2009, 04:11:38 pm
A lot of these florida curs are used both ways.  They'll work cows all day with you and then go catch hogs at night.  Most are only used on one or the other.  The florida curs I have come from a long line of cow dogs.  They make natural hog dogs.  It's a fine line and you've got to spend lots of time with a smart dog to get them to do it.  You can reach me at floridacrackercur@yahoo.com
13  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Parker Curs on: May 14, 2009, 06:05:00 pm
Larry Parkers dogs are the real deal.  They hunt deep and hard.  They will outdo most curs and hounds.  They are great stop dogs and great strike dogs.  They are faster than most dogs.  He has bred a natural ability to roll out and go hunting.  You guys should help him keep his pure line going.  He cannot produce enough.  If I ever get my hands on any more they will not be for sale.  Larry lives to hunt and is a good person.  There is nothing better than hunting in louisiana with larry parker and those parker curs.  With boudin, cracklin, crawfish and all that good cajun food what else do you need.

15  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: hunting florida curs on: May 13, 2009, 09:22:25 pm
This little girl is as good as it gets.  She's been baying since she was 3 months old, will roll out 1,000 yards and shut a hog down.  She's got a great nose and is making a top strike dog.  Her brother is my buddies best cow dog and her mom and dad is from one of the best working cow dog lines I've ever seen.  She's a full sister to scott's (realdogs) TJ dog out in texas from a different litter.  She's built right and fast as lightning.  Hopefully I can keep her alive long enough to get a litter out of her.  She has no respect for a bull or a boar hog. This is the gyp I was talking to you about crackerc.

I know there are a lot of cattle ranches in texas, more than in any other state.  I would think that a lot of those dogs coming off the old ranches would be similar to the florida cur.  I'd like to see how many are  being used for hog hunting in texas, what they look like and how they hunt.  There has got to be some old texas cur cow dog lines out there.
18  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: hunting florida curs on: May 08, 2009, 06:01:27 pm
As you can see from the similar looks of these partin curs and the rest of the pups and florida curs posted here, the florida cur is a breed of its own.  The most important thing and what makes the dogs so good is that they come from working backgrounds, whether cows or hogs, any nonworking unhealthy dogs are usually culled. There are no florida cur puppy mills, and they are harder than most to get.    Who knows exactly what went into these florida cur lines but whatever it is it worked. Whether they make a full circle on cattle like a partin or catch and hold or bay they are working dogs first and foremost.

19  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Parker Curs on: May 08, 2009, 07:39:25 am
Larry is the only person I know that sells all his pups before they hit the ground.  I've had a few.  They have a natural ability to roll out and go hunting.  They bay real good and are fast dogs.  Most are black brindle.  You rarely see any purebreds for sale unless they come from larry's yard.  Most being sold by other guys are crosses and they seem to cross well on anything.

Yeah crackerc, luv that monkey dog.  My buddy stacy says he's got a friend that's hunting a 1 year old dog out of monkey and J.J.  and is a hard hunting machine.  I've got a super female, the pup being held by my daughter in the previous fl cur post and she's already striking and baying her own hog at 8 months, real gritty, out of one of the best fl cur lines I've seen, Maybe down the road we could get her and monkey together.
