Slim you’ve always been a smart assed, egotistical foul mouthed kid on this forum. You can hear it by the way you speak in your videos. You buy a “tater” dog from Monty Bennett a few years back and talk like you’ve been hunting for decades.
Yes, I care about a dog’s well being. If that makes me a pussy - then so be it.
That dog you have is a handy tool to have in certain situations. What that dog is NOT though, is a bullldog. I have seen some shut down after a wreck where a bulldog won’t. All I was saying was a vest may help with that.
You posted several times about losing this dog recently, seemed pretty let down about it too. I bet you would’ve paid $200 to get her back. Look what she’s turned into for you - proud enough to post pictures and videos of her. So maybe the $200 would’ve been worth it and decreased her chances of being gutted - but that would’ve hurt your tough hog hunter image.
And good luck with the plate - she’s way too small for one, but you probably already know that too tough guy.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: When do you call it quits?

I’m patient. I’ll give a dog until 2 or so considering they really don’t see their prime until 5 or 6 anyways.
My question would be what does he do when the dogs are baying hard or catch out? Does he get excited and help, ignore them or run away scared?
Had a late starter that was similar, but I wouldn’t say he acted scared. Walk right into a bay, almost touch noses with the damn thing and just turn around a walk out like cool as can be. Not long after the flip switched and acted like he’d been doing it his whole life.
I start all mine in the woods. Pretty sure I had one get rolled recently. No visible signs, but considering what was going on was very probable. Set her back for a few hunts and got right back in the saddle. Maybe same has happened to him without you knowing.
Not right or wrong, I see things a little different. I enjoy the challenges and feel like if a dog has the heart and the willingness to work for me I’ll do what I can to bring it out of him. Kind of like coaching I guess.
19 months is still pretty young in my book. Nice looking dog and to me the thing you have going for you is that he hunts. Hard to teach that.

Man that’s a bad spot to take a hit. Glad everything worked out okay. As we’ve discussed on here before, I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of a shorter vest.

Great info, thanks for sharing.
Had a panicked friend call me last year that his house dog ate a bag of what you described. He lived and I was scratching my head wondering how.

Year old gyp I call Turtle, her name was turd for the first six months as that’s exactly what she was. Nothing special to look at, but fits my mold as I prefer smaller built females for the most part. She wanted to stay by me at first, but the last two hunts she’s learned to go to a bay, help catch and hunted out with the older dogs about half the time so she is showing progress and that’s good for me. Getting some box time here. Thought this was a funny pic - wind got right and they smelled my stock trailer that I had pigs in earlier that day. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

NLA Hunter I wish we could get Pride here in north Texas………sure would like to try it.
Reuben how did your dogs do on the black sack of Valu Pak? Mine liked it, but they just didn’t hold well no matter how much I fed them. The dealer here only sells the black bag and the silver bag. Silver was $2 more, but they look a lot better on it.

As far as the coon goes, I guess my question is why? Why risk a face injury? Also, they may be hell on a coon but that’s a lot different from a hog twice its size. Promotes the shaking as well. I may be overthinking it, to each his own. Just my .02 never have understood the coon thing.

No experience with Bravecto.
If it’s an option, keep them on concrete and you’ll never have to use anything.
I hope you find a long term solution for your problem.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / South Texas Grizzly - working a rally
|

There was a discussion yesterday regarding working a rally. If any of you are interested in watching a good video, there is a piece in particular where James works and explains a rally. He was straight eradication so whatever his bay dogs do not catch, he bays and shoots.
You can find it on YouTube - South Texas Grizzly parts 1,2 &3. Each are twenty minutes long. I think the rally is on pt 3.

Nice work Thomas. Nice little chunk of change for some dog food money too if you’re selling them.

Nice work. He would not be nice to young pups full of piss and vinegar for sure.
Curious - how big is your running pen?
