Clue pretty much summed it up as good as it can be summed up.  Culling is directly proportional to expectations.

I wish it were as easy as mixing paint.  Black and white make gray.  Dogs don't always come out gray Wink

When I was a boy my uncle had a one eyed fiest named Mitzie.  She would tree squirrels, run rabbits, tree a cat, just a dog.  She had a blue milky eye that would get a little better, and then a little worse all of the time.  One time I asked my uncle after she had just had a bad tangle with a daytime coon, "you don't feel bad for Mitzie and her just having one eye".....My uncle replied "Mitzie has been one eyed so long .....she don't know other dogs have two"   Grin

I have made more dogs than I have ruined by taking them hunting when they are young.  If the dogs have what they need, exposure is the key.  The dogs that I really love to own don't need training....they just need a ride to the woods.

Plotthounds....where does your Heat/Hammer bred dogs come from.  I have been raising them like that for 20 yrs.  I have alot of other strains in them now but that is where I started.

Semmes said a mouthful......When I hunted hard and had alot of dogs, I would have a lot of people call and tell me that they wanted a dog that would get gone, find a hog no matter what it took, run him for 1/2 the day and into the night, and be bayed when you got to him.  I got to where my patent answer was ....."dogs like that are way more fun to talk about and brag about than they are to unsnap in the woods"  Just food for thought.

Ive been doing this barking and no barking thing for 20 years.  I have even done it with Parker before.  The key is find the traits that you value the most in a dog.  If they carry some bad attributes (in your mind) with them....see what you can live with.  Some people will sacrifice nose for being quiet.  Some people will sacrifice grit for speed.  The key is breed or find what is working for you in your area.  My hunting Partners have hunted Open mouthed plot dogs since the mid 80's.  They have consistently caught more or as many hogs as anyone I know.  Their dogs aren't for everyone.  They have fun, hunt hard, and catch a ton of hogs.  My cousin lives in South Florida.  His dogs are quiet, rough, and short range.  They each wouldn't trade for the others best dog; but both catch a bunch of hogs.  Im not sure who I heard this from but I saw this one time:

Breeding dogs aint like mixing paint.  You can't just take black and white and make gray. If you could take nose and bottom, and breed to silent and grit.  It would be that easy.

Think about it

The absolute best hog dog you will ever find will be that once in a lifetime cur dog, but they are just about as scarce as an 18 yr old virgin.  I hunt and raise plotts, and very few curs can hold up to the standards that these dogs have set for me.  For any kind of dog, you have to set your priorities in order of importance and see if they stack up.   I have heard alot of quotes that just make me laugh,  "he has a dang cold nose for a cur dog"...well ok, does that mean he is cold nosed or just medium nose?  "My cur dogs will run one for 3 hrs"...ok so will my year old puppies.  I really dont want to start a pissin match caause I hunt what I like and everybody should do the same.....and I have been to places where there were alot of hogs and my hounds jumped one hog, ran it for 2 hrs while cur dogs caught 4.....and I have seen some great cur dogs that could get it done anywhere at any time......but it seems to me most people get excited when a cur dog does what I EXPECT my hounds to do.
19  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Ponder on: December 20, 2012, 01:58:59 pm
I almost didnt want to tell this until somebody else did.  I had 2 dogs that could open a chainlink latch and my buddy had their daddy and he could.  I dont mean sometimes...I mean one gyp in particular could do it as fast as you could...wash out her pen, turn around to get a scoop of food, and you heard her hit the latch and u better be headed that way or she was gone.  She was a very special plott dog and learned to go silent.  When she was 10 months old you could put her on last nights track in the dirt road, and she would bark before she got out of the ditch.  When she was 3 to 4 years old she went totally silent running shoats, but would bark on big hogs.  By the time she was 5 or so she was silent until she jumped and then if the hog didnt stop, she would hush after about 20-30 minutes.  I believe she had the ability to reason.

I guess I am braggin but ...I would rather bragg on my kids than my dogs...but they will both make u a lair sometimes

I am a football coach and we are furtunate...we won the state championship this year and 2009...we dont get to hunt alot during football season until it is over...Last year we had a team to cancell during Ga bear season....we were on the invite but I hoped my boys could kill a bear...(They have probable been to 25-30 bear trees but never been able to kill one )  A lady shot a bear with buckshot and didnt hurt it bad but ticked it off.  He was in the middle of a block and was puttin a whoopin on some dogs.  Most of the people on the club were just deer hunters and there were only 4-5 real bear hunters.  The lady that shot the bear was a deer hunter.  They called my buddy and I to come around there on the c.b and when we got there, ther was no less than 10 grown men and alot more woman stand ing in the road kicking rocks and spittin and chewing.  They were scared to go in and kill the bear on the ground.  They asked if we would go kill it.  Both of my boys  (10 and 11 at the time) grab their guns and are almost in the woods when the Club President walks up to me and my buddy and tells us that it didnt matter who shot the bar in there that the girl (wich happened to be the Presidents 33 yr old daughter) got to claim it.  U would have thought that my boys had just got a stocking full of dog sh&*t for christmas.  They put their junk up and got in the truck , and as politely as they could at the time, told me she could get her own bear.  We did go in and kill the bear for her, and they sucked it up and went in with us, and never found a buckshot in it.  So not only have they been to hog bays but they have seen alot of bear trees and bays also.
