83  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: FLEAS on: July 24, 2022, 12:23:46 pm
The fleas are back this year…my outside dogs are doing good but the inside dog was getting bumps all over on account he is allergic to flea bites from what I can see…he has the run of the backyard several times a day so that doesn’t help…
84  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Best Hunting Airedale Footage on: July 23, 2022, 08:45:04 am
The show Airedale…l don’t know about now but I don’t think it has changed since then…
In my younger years I used to run my dogs at the beach when no one went to that particular beach in those days…I ran the dogs for exercise and to teach them how to road my style…I also did this to find out speed and stamina from each dog…

I had a Sandhill x Mooreland Airedale, probably around 65-70 lbs…very good looking dog…short coupled and flashy…this dog at half to 3/4 speed had a normal gait…anything past that and he started hopping…I knew that wasn’t normal so I slowed it down until he would get back into a normal stride…

Of course there is a reason for everything and I came up with a theory as to why he hopped at higher speeds…the show Airedale is bred to be short coupled compared to being tall which will exaggerate the leg length… not a square built dog but taller than long…this will make the dog prance…must pick up front legs before rear feet hit front feet making the dog prance…looks good but not very efficient…you don’t see this in the wild…
The hackney horse was developed in this way…breeders call it natural…it becomes a natural trait when the hackney is selectively bred to be short coupled…natural gait out of necessity due to unnatural shorter body…
85  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Best Hunting Airedale Footage on: July 22, 2022, 11:49:58 am
Very impresive ....Any dog that can kill a coyote or javelina singlehandidly is a freak...What are his bloodlines,  Sandhill, Mooreland ?
I used to have a combination of the two and sometimes pure of each…also Quachita out of Mena, Arkansas…

Cajun…they have a wide loin and solid rears to match…the width between the front legs is not wide…but the chest is deep and the withers arch high into the neck and with a very muscular neck…

When they spread their rear legs and pin their adversaries down they can exert some power…

I believe a lot of the power is in the wide loins, sturdy rears and muscular necks…the necks are not wide but they are deep…

The mouth is fairly long and the ivory is easy to see…lol
86  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Best Hunting Airedale Footage on: July 22, 2022, 04:40:50 am
If you clip their coats short they can go quite a bit longer without getting hot…I noticed that with the ones I had…Airedale’s usually are not fighters with other dogs which I liked and will side step a dog that is persistent in trying to start a fight…but once they commit, they can and will be fierce…

87  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: MADE ME A BLOWING HORN on: July 11, 2022, 07:46:35 pm
Looks good…I have 5 or 6 blow horns…I’ve got two that work really well…
One is a higher pitch cow horn that is really loud…
The other is from England…an old fox hunter horn from way back…very loud with a low pitch…several things that tells me it was used many years ago but like anything else…no real proof but my reasoning is this…the mouth piece is pewter which is about 30 percent lead…when blowing the horn, it  starts flaking off pieces of the horn…after a while the big end started cracking when blowing extra loud…I went ahead and coated it with clear epoxy to keep together…it looked brand new when I first got it so it must of been in storage for many years…I’ve had horns for over 40 years and they pretty well are in the same condition as when new…so must be very old…
88  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Hunting a bred dog on: July 10, 2022, 04:05:55 pm
If you were running rabbits with beagles I would say hunt her until she doesn’t want to hunt because she is about to have pups…

In a controlled environment such as a bay pen and having the gyp baying pigs at strategic times and durations…I think it would be helpful in improving your chances of having pups that will naturally take to baying and running hogs more so than if you didn’t…

Years ago a friend of mine had an awesome black brindle female…she was as good as they come as a catch dog…one of her sons was a black brindle as well, my favorite color…
We took him on a hunt one night and he was acting up terribly and I could see it was all a handling issue…I glared at that dog and thought…if you were my dog I’d beat your a$$ and straighten you out…we made eye contact and that was it, the rest of the hunt if could of got loose he would of had to die because he would have attacked me… learned something that night…lol

The bottom line…

Example using a feeding scenario because it is simple and easy to correct and it applies to the majority of discipline issues that come up…

We feed the pup and it growls and hackles up…give it a good tap on the head always keeping your cool…the pup will know if your doing it with anger…

Keep messing with the food bowl, and the pup growls again… give a harder tap on the head…keep working with the feed bowl or something close to the food bowl and repeat the process until the pup wags its tail…only at that time you pet the pup…repeat daily until he totally gets the hang of it…

The idea is for the pup to get the message…and not only to get the message but for the pup to remain confident and trusting around you…when you can do that you will have a better relationship with the pup and eventually, the dog that it will become…

Another thing…no self respecting dog will take excessive discipline…choose how you discipline wisely…usually, you can discipline most any dog you own as long as it has a way to retreat…

In my yard I have done lots of correcting…I have learned that when correcting they will circle back to me and lick my hand, I call it asking for forgiveness…at least that is how I see it and it also builds trust when I accept their apology…

Reuben that is all fine and dandy but that ship has already sailed for taps to correct aggression issues now. This is a grown dog baring teeth over things he doesn't like. And every time another issue happens and he gets away with it, it just reinforces it more in the dog. At this point there are only three ways to deal with it, and only the last two would be viable to me. One is he could just ignore it and or do his best to not get in those situations with the dog and hope none of his loved ones do either. Two cull the dog. Or three do the work to break the behavior. Watch how a professional trainer breaks this behavior in a grown dog, it takes work, commitment, and consistency and depending on how bad it actually is at this point it might be more than most regular dogs owners are willing to do or can do.

Also if I raised them then I can discipline them whether they have a way to retreat or not and if I couldn't they wouldn't be here long. I agree there are always limits but if you are a good handler then you shouldn't need to make many "hard" corrections and even those should be done intelligently and within reason. Association is everything when it comes to dog training, so it's always good to keep that in mind with all of your interactions with your dogs. This is all just my opinion so take it for what its worth.

Rednose…I totally agree with you…

I have been dealing with dogs many years and most of my corrections have been in the back yard…which includes breaking them off deer…breaking dogs is very easy and simple for me including getting the best out of them simply by doing the right things at the right time…doing the right things at the right time is key…I will venture to say that the inexperienced won’t even know training or corrections are taking place when my dogs are running free in the back yard or even when hunting…
What I was actually saying in my last post had mostly to do with building the right foundation with a pup so that the progression towards mature does have to end with issues like desertdog is having with his dog…

T-dog…my bet is that the dog you are dealing with will strike-out…but hoping for the best…

Good story Austin…that’s a really good picture of your dogs in the boat and the dogs acted really well finding and catching that young boar…

I feel the same when losing my best or favorite dog…it takes some of the pleasure out of the hunt but after a while it works out…

Sounds like as much or more that he’s challenging you than feeling threatened. He wouldn’t make it here. You can probably fix a lot of that but the way I am, I wouldn’t like his natural demeanor enough to feed him another kibble. We all have vises that we will tolerate when it comes to dogs. For me, biting and fighting are my two biggest dislikes. I have ZERO tolerance for either. Either get along or you’ll get along lol.

Yep…when the dog feels threatened and defends himself and you backed down…now the dog knows he can challenge you anytime he dislikes something you want from him…it is much harder to break a dog once this happens…know when and how much is key…

Even a chihuahua will come out fighting when he feels threatened when cornered…

That is why I said earlier that you must know when and how much discipline to apply…if you like your dog

I also think when disciplining a dog we must maintain our cool…once in a while we do need to make a statement…

If I had a dog that I couldn’t break from possibly biting someone I would eventually get rid of it…
97  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: What do you think? on: June 16, 2022, 09:38:55 pm
As a 7 week old pup the pup should have been broke of any aggression…a hard slap on top of the head and and again if the pup keeps growling and or hackled up…when the pup starts wagging his tail is the time to pet them up…this usually happens at feeding time with some pups…when the pup that shows aggression at feeding time it must be totally broken from any aggressive issues by feeding and messing with the pup until it doesn’t hackle up…might take a while to break him and then test regularly when feeding to make it a normal condition…

When disciplining a dog we should leave the dog a way out…you want the dog to retreat away from you so you can maintain alpha status…if you corner a dog or the dog feels he doesn’t have a way out he will take a stance and fight back or come out fighting…the last thing you want is for the dog to lose respect for you…

I can and will come down on any of my dogs but I know better than to put a dog in a situation where he feels that he or she has to fight their way out…we just need to know when and how much discipline to apply for the correction needed…
98  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Great hunting dogs don’t have bad days… on: June 15, 2022, 09:47:28 pm
Yep…breeding for consistency and the right traits…
The overall demeanor of the pup is important to me..natural winding, finding and trailing at a young age is key…

Having to feed a lot of tracks to make a dog is a red flag to me…it is better to break a pup from trashing than trying to make a hunting dog out of a pup that isn’t clicking…

Breed those that have that natural ability on account that is what we should be breeding for…the pup that displays those traits naturally at eight weeks of age will continue to do so as a hunting dog…

Consistency is best when the parents and grandparents have the same traits…even better if the great grandparents have a few great ones sprinkled in…
99  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Great hunting dogs don’t have bad days… on: June 14, 2022, 09:06:25 pm
Great dogs give their best day in and day out…if they don’t perform as they should then there is a reason for it…I said a reason and not an excuse…
This type of dog can hunt itself to death in the hot summertime conditions because they have no quit…I’ve had a yard full of these from the late 1990’s to about 2007…I’ve had a few good ones since but nothing like  back in those days…I had good ones that looked good in any company before 1990 but after a few generations I was having pups with excessive drive, grit and hunt…

At one time I thought that we could improve percentage’s in puppies with the right qualities but as I produced more litters I saw the hunt and grit increase along with drive…then one day it came to me…good dogs can produce better than themselves through proper selection of pups…a personal theory but I saw it happen…selecting the right pups with the right qualities, proving them and then breeding them…the best defense is a good offense…the right females got bred on the first heat cycles just as they would in the wild…
Nowadays the biggest challenge is finding the right dogs to hunt and breed…
