9383  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Interviewing reporters? on: July 16, 2010, 10:29:39 am
If you don't know what to say just get into the good politician mode. Talk a lot but don't really say anything negative. Grin

The only thing about the Peta folks is that they can tell a lie and look you in the eye doing it from what I have seen and heard.

ther are a small percentage of tree huggers like PETA but there are also a small percentage of hunters and people with our beliefs but the majority of the public is somewhat neutral so these are the folks that peta is targeting to get on their side.
So any positive feedback from our point of view to this larger population will speak volumes in our favor.
We can not be prepared enough. This is a good thread, we need to be ready and prepared for a possible interview.

Also, we need to make sure that we do all that we can do to keep a positve image in the public eye.

i new 2 different hog hunters back in the 1980's that used a cross between greyhound and pit to use as RCD's. the ones I saw looked like greyhounds on steroids.

9387  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Opinions wanted - On catchdogs performance on: July 15, 2010, 08:15:18 am
to simply answer your question...yes your standards are lower than most for a catchdog. i believe everyone that i hunt with would cull that cd if they were "spinning in circles screaming like a girl". the cd is supposed to be the muscle to your pack, that is why we say "we sent in the calvary and it was a SEALED DEAL". they are supposed to seal the deal. having a catchdog that gets hit and hollers like that is like having a bodyguard that hears a gunshot and they take off running and leave the person they were supposed to be protecting. they get paid to put their life on the line for those people. well the cd is "paid" to put their life on the line to catch hogs. when they don't do that they are no longer a cd. as hard as it may be to hear...that my friend is a cull..... Sad

Josh, I agree 100%.

I have not seen so many culls in the APBT as some folks have though. I think that knowing dogs and picking pups/dogs correctly in the pit breed helps. Also, IMO, training and timing are important. You must have an idea if the pup is ready and mature enough to catch a big bad boar. It is best to start the pup or young dog on a smaller hog to instill confidence. Twice in the pen should be enough if it is the right catch dog. Smiley

9388  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Tweety X Buck pups... on: July 15, 2010, 07:30:17 am
nice pups.... I had the same thing happen to me with the first litter from my favorite line of mtn curs. I got one pup that was white with spots. Must of been walker from way back. anyway, those pups turned out pretty good.
A little walker in the mix might be a good thing... Smiley
9389  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Puppies eye turned blue on: July 14, 2010, 07:50:47 pm
i can't say for sure, but it could be a reactin to one of the vaccines like the 8 in one. i had a pup or 2 that got this overnight and i thought the pups were going blind because the eyes turned bluish gray. the vet told me it was a reaction to a vaccine and that it would clear up within a week or so. don't remember how look it took but they cleared up fine.
9390  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: home aid heart worm treatment on: July 14, 2010, 07:22:16 pm
I don't know the dosage but if the dog starts to pant hard and looks to be in distress you can crush (pulverize) an aspirin and mix it with a little hamburger and feed it to the dog. Usually the dog will do better within 30 minutes. I have treated several dogs with the aspirin when I gave the dog too much Ivomec and the dog had heartworms.I usually did this to the dogs that were getting close to the cull list just to do some experimenting.

back in 1983 a recipe was put in the Foster and Smith vet catalog  for curing heartworms and they almost lost their liscense over that. They thought it was ok to put this recipe out there because in Australia and other countries that was the normal treatment.

To use sheepwormer pill, active ingrediate is Levamisole. There are no major side effects and can be given with food but I think empty stomach could be better.

I'm not saying that you should do this but this is how I did it.

This is more a home remedy type recipe. My disclaimer. Huh?

Steps for treatment:

1. use 1 pill per day for each 40#s of body weight for 10 days

2. rest dog off of wormer for 10 days

3. repeat step 1, when worming is complete move to next step

4. Rest dog for 30 days so that dead worms can decay and be absord. This is so the dog won't get a heart attack.

I treated 3 dogs with this and cured them.

Another dog that a friend of mine had had heartworms, hookworms and was about to deliver and he took her to the vet and the vet said she wouldn't make it. The vet just gave him some iron with liver concentrate and told him to take her home and that he hoped she could live over the whelping of the pups. I gave her some liver to eat to get her strength up so she could eat and then I wormed her for hooks.

Then I instructed my friend to follow the recipe and the gyp made a full recovery.

either way if you use the ivomec method or the levamisole method make sure you rest you dog afterwards, especially if it is a good one... Smiley

9392  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: I just dont understand on: July 14, 2010, 02:27:16 pm
you know it is fresh hog sign when you see a shiny hog track in the soft soil and/or a green blade of grass stuck in the track. Then you see fresh rootings.
I expect the dogs to find and bay a hog when the sign is this fresh...

I know quite a bit of hog hunters don't want a dog to open any on track but IMO I believe that most hogs know the routine. It's not just the dogs but the general hunting noise that could be a problem.

Example:

We pull up with the Diesel f-350 dually and unload the 4 wheeler and wait on our friends to show up.  We collar up the dogs and vest up the catch dog and catch up on some bull. Thirty minutes later we start the hunt and another 15 minutes to hit the fresh hog sign.... By this time the hogs rolled out at least  1 mile  or maybe further and the hogs are now laying up in the middle of that thick 20 acre briar patch that most dogs will not even enter. The hogs probably moved out to the briar patch when the First dually pulled up to the gate. It doesn't take the hogs long to learn that this trick works well on the average hog dog... Shocked
9393  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Raising Pups, opinions wanted on: July 13, 2010, 02:21:23 pm
Uglydog,

I am new here and this is an awesome thread..... Smiley Cool

My 2 cents worth is genetics first. The dog has got to be built right. want to hunt and act right.

Environment is very important because a dog can be brought to his maximum potential in the right hands or can become a mediocre dog inthe wrong hands.
I have seen great hogdogs go to someone who in 3 months sold the dog because it trail barked a little, or in their opinion the dog goes too far on a bad running hog and usually this type of person neglects feeding the dog regularly, does not worm it and probably will not have it on heart worm prevention. Will talk noise on the person who sold the dog and then talk noise on the breeder and it just goes on and on. I have seen this often enough.

A hog dog is born not made.

An extreme example that I like to use is; John Doe buys a weiner dog to run against the greyhounds at the track and because he has plenty of money spends 1,000,000 dollars on special training and nutrition. At the end of the year he is still a slow weiner dog compared to the racing greyhounds and no amount of training will help.

In the meantime Joe Blow who also has plenty of money goes out and buys 20  top blooded greyhound pups after consulting an expert and hires a good trainer to feed, socialize and train the pups and at the end of the year he  Smiley :)goes to the track and racks up... He does all this with the fraction of the cost that John Doe spent...
9394  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Tracking Systems....? on: July 13, 2010, 12:50:22 pm
MN-10 is not bad for the money. Heavy cover it works for several miles. but is supposed to range 5-6 miles. I never had to locate at that range but very dependable and lasts for years without replacing the batteries. The unit requires a 9 volt battery but it lasts for at least a year. you can use up to 10 collars. I do not know how it compares to others. I hear the quick track is at least as good. Lots of bear hunters used this system back when I bought mine because of the dependability and hardiness of it.

9397  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: How many of yall turn the bad ones loose? on: July 13, 2010, 07:09:18 am
Around here we rarely take them alive, unless its to train some younger dogs. I say kill him, all of them. Of course my grandfather is a rancher and a farmer, and I work on his place and our hog population is here to stay. Ive seen too much of the destructive side of the hogs. They tear up farm land, and slaughter our turkey population.  Doesnt make sense to me to catch a dog killer and turn him loose. I like my dogs too much to loose them on a hog that we have already taken down once. Hog hunters would barr way less hogs if their lives depended on the crops that they raised!!!!!

I have seen farmers quit farming at certain locations because the hogs eat at least half the crops. The fields I am talking about were located next to forrest land that didn't allow any kind of hunting.

Where we hunt if the rancher or farmer found out that we turned the hogs loose we would be kicked out. We do not bar a hog we take them out.
9398  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: How many of yall turn the bad ones loose? on: July 12, 2010, 10:24:24 pm
Bar hogs have low testosterone, so that makes them fat and slower and less aggressive. Also their teeth grow longer because they are not having to fight for the sows with other boars. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  Cool
9399  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: pups lead? on: July 12, 2010, 03:15:17 pm
Put the pups on a chain for a day or 2, they will calm down and accept the chain.  After that put a leash on them and let them run around until they calm down. Kind of ignore them during this training. once they are ok with the leash  pick up the leash and kind of play with the pup so that it will follow you around. If the pup wants to pull away a little follow the pup and try to get its attention off the leash. If it is fighting the leash let it run around with the leash until it is ok with it. This has always worked for me. Dragging the pup around will not help. It will take a long time to break the pup if it is forced to lead. You can also give the pup a small treat to get his attention off the lease and keep a treat handy so the pup can focus on the treat and not the leash.
9400  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: whats the best way to cattle break a dog on: July 12, 2010, 11:49:58 am
make sure the dog is baying hogs (dog must know that it is ok to hunt hogs) before using the e-collar. You don't want him to associate all baying as bad or it will set him back.

First I would try the command to get out using a deep voice cause dogs submit to that (has been my observation). If he gets out and comes to you pet him real quick and move on to hog hunting....

I would do this about 3 different days. After that it would be e-collar time.

Make sure the catch dog never catches a cow because it is hard to break a catch dog once he catches one, at least I couldn't ever trust mine after that episode. Before he could walk right through cattle but once a friend of mine bought a pack of hogdogs and they were on a cow and this ruined my pit. E-collar didn't work on him.
