HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dog yard in the woods

I have my setup half and half. I keep 4 individual ground pens 20x100 wire ground pens. 1 house per pen but large enough to shelter 3-4 dogs each. Each pen has electric wire around bottom parameter. About 1 foot off ground and 6-8 inches away from wire. Once they get popped a few times they steer clear of ever trying to dig or crawl out.
For The hard core moles that dig 3 ft out and under I will put a shock collar and burn the hair off em as soon as a toe hits dirt with criminal intent!
I also keep a set of off the ground kennels for in season gyps or injured dogs for full sanitary environments.
The large kennels are great due to low maintenance on stools due to weather typically cleans the yard for you.
As far as pairing dogs to minimize fighting I typically pair dogs that commonly get along and always keep the dominant dogs separate to break up the Alfa syndrome.
Has worked for 30+ years with minimal issues. But I recommend putting together a setup that compliments your style and pack of dogs.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / For your Worm, Flea and med issues minus Vet expenses!
|

Since the Veterinarian shutdown for all DIY meds. About the only thing over the counter these days are a few decent antibiotics and topical sprays or creams.
For flea, tick and worm.......its back to the stone age or please pay for fluffy and their 18 additional buddies...IE the hunting pack!....to come in and pay for an office visit to determine if my dog has fleas or worms. Smh
Since I have always handled everything medically in canine, bovine, and fowl since a child.....complete ripoff and classic monopoly of organized institutions denying individuals the tools needed to bypass the mandatory vet craze that has been pushed upon the public the last few years.
So what is your bypass? Lemme here from the DIY old hands that refuse to lay down and take the whole pack in for treats and exams to determine the obvious?
Mine.......Check out Hoofandhound.com! They have the good stuff minus the ridiculous exam expense.
Also buy a VET Book! Worth every penny for years of DIY animal care.
Keep some Penicillinin the fridge year-round.
Let's hear everyone's else's 2020 medical hacks!!!!

Yes actually we have been in some heavy discussions lately on making some line breeding with a couple of my close friends that keep this same blood. Have been doing alot of researching these lines in the last few years as well and have uncovered a few old Thicket lines I was unaware of still existed. Couple more I located that I am still trying to validate. Really cool stuff in the Yeller dog world these days my friend. Just need the Timber time to apply the research.
Mike.......Yea buddy I have been slipping in and out of your area lately but all business. I have went through couple phones since I last spoke at ya. Shoot me your number again on PM when ya get a chance and I might try to drop in on you boys and attempt to change your colorblind ways! Lol

Also to answer your question Austesus. Yes we did accomplish the Yeller catchdog project to my satisfaction a few years ago. We successfully bred straight yeller dogs that were No bark, No Bay. Led them on leashes same as bulldogs and caught great with them. Unfortunately we lost the true finished product dogs in the line of duty and I haven't had the time to put back into the project to recreate them again.
We did have to cull exceeding hard to keep some from falling back after taking a beating but the end result I would have followed into a Rhinoceros Ralley! Cool project and I highly recommend trying if you get the time.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Strait Catch Yellow Black Mouths. (Who is interested)?

The ones that made the cut for us were just as dependable as a bull dog. We had one that caught and was knocked unconcious that was still locked. Unfortunately the main ones we selected and bred met the fate of a rough cur dog and we not able to keep enough to continue reproducing a line of continuous straight catch.
My cousin Irondog87 got a puppy off my old bloodline that typically are long range cold nosed stand back type dogs....So far he cannot make him do anything but catch out. Littermates to his are all rough but nothing like that. Genetics are a crap shoot. But to answer the original question I posted. YES you can produce a straight catching Yeller dog that is just as dependable as a bull dog. We did it.....no questions about it. Continuing a line of them? ? Has proven to be a Hell of a chore due to their life expectancy.

Best to Best and Cull the rest.
Find something that performs to your expectations........and breed them to something even better.
From conception to grave, always ask more of your dog and never be satisfied until it delivers.
Decide early....Tool or Pet, then utilize accordingly. (Doesn't mean cruelty). Working dogs deserve the time and care if they put theirs in.
Sharp shovels. Don't lie to yourself due to looks or attachments. If it doesn't work.......IT DOESN'T WORK! Scrub and hit the drawing board again.
Several generations of strict trial and error and you should have something to be proud of.
I agree with VERY LITTLE of this post. The part about being honest with yourself might be the only part. I have never found any logic in spending more time, energy or money into a substandard product that never worked to begin with. But if you truly can be honest with yourself about what's in front of you.....then you either have a product that is sufficient and can be built on.....or you have reached satisfaction in going in circles. Regardless it boils down to what satisfies you.

In the end.....you need to establish yourself as the dominant one.
Put a stick across both of their rears when the start that mess and next time you won't have to walk over there. If that doesn't work.....try the stick between their ears.

Sounds like a cull, I've learned the hard way. Now days if I don't see consistent improvement they're outa here. I prefer a dog that's impressing me when I take him hunting

Good job. I've marked a lot of boar hogs & not barred them. If they have good color or show a lot of Russian in them. Wide & tall in the front & low & narrow in the rear. I like to let them breed.
Will gladly trade ya any Russian blooded hog we catch for some good ole Rooter blood. Wish Russians had never came into East Texas.....its been downhill ever since.
