Keep
Hunting smart bud. You’ll get him there. I talked to a guy the other day I have a grown dog to that was just too rough for our style. He fit his style better but he told me it took 3 new staple guns to pull him back together after one hunt. He said that was educational for him lol. He’s still rough but some smarter about it.

He looks like he was built to run. It’s good of the Marine Corps to let you use their dogs.

Yeah they’re pretty and uniform too. I like that. Which dogs are they out of? Did you ever try and get anything on that old black and tan male?

Sounds like a lot of action. Glad your pup made it out. Maybe it was educational for your pup. Those gators sure make me nervous, they sure like dog!

You’re correct, it’s too common. I’ve seen several people I wanted lock in the kennel their dogs were in or put them on the chain their dog was on and let them drink the same green slime water with no shade and only be fed whenever the person felt like it. I’d like to them to the woods and kick them out and tell to go find me a hog and if they didn’t or they didn’t do it the way I wanted them to then do the ultimate cull. Don’t give them the consideration that they are sick, or weak, cut up and beat up, dehydrated, malnourished, or no feet because the urine and feces have blistered them so bad. Yeah it gets to me too!

I can’t say 100% that a spider bite is what it was. It was an educated guess. The vet I had look at it said absolutely there wasn’t anything in it and him and my buddy both said that it looked identical to what they had seen in a couple of their greyhounds and that those were spider bites. Freak deal, and like we all know, it only happens to the good ones.

King’s brother on the left and sister on the right. There is one more female and she looks like King.

You can see the deformity in her front right foot in the picture where she’s eating.

Your pups look good. You for sure keep them healthy.

I just picked up my pup today from a buddy. His momma is Outlaws grandma which makes Deputy Dawgs Moon gyp an aunt to him. His daddy is a littermate to my Ava gyp. They are more closely related than that but I won’t bore y’all with all that. His name is King. He came by the name a couple of ways. One, this particular buddy is always telling me that I’m his hero and I always tell him nah, “your the King”. Second, this pups daddy is named Ken. Ken is the name I gave him before Kyle (Barbie) and Ben King picked him up as a weanling. I just combined their names lol. So coming from the King and the Kings, I figured it appropriate. He’s gonna be a looker one day. I shows how strong genetics are, the Walker blood is very minimal but I do gravitate towards the dogs with the houndier traits usually.

Ken his daddy. He was a smoking fast sucker in his prime but has been crippled in his left rear stifle and is one eyed now but still gets the job done.

Reba his momma on the left and Ava on the right. They are first cousins for the sake of simplicity. Reba doesn’t get used much. About the time I was going to start hauling her, she got spider bit on her front foot. It blew up quick and swole up so bad that it literally dislocated her toes. The big pad in the center of the foot literally rotted out even on super strong antibiotics and being soaked and scrubbed twice a day. Her siblings are really nice dogs and she hunts and works hard until that foot gets soar and then you have to put her up. I have really high hopes for ole King.

I see. Y’all have a few lizards in the Neches where you’re at don’t you?

There weren’t many in it further north where I hunted. I never liked that River much. It always seemed to have more than its share of trees and brush in it.

Hoofin it will expose you when you’re spoiled to riding up relatively close, just ask WOW lol. He and I both about had to use your Indian dirt trick and we didn’t even go that far, it was just in a hurry through thick cover. Sounds like your dogs did good again. Keep putting it on them.

Williamsld where do y’all live and hunt if you don’t mind me asking? I use to hunt a few areas along the Neches. Had some good times with some still to this day, great friends.

Sounds like your dogs did a real good job. I’m glad they came out ok.

Sounds like they are all being the way they were bred to be. The more they want to bite the longer it takes to figure out the relaying aspect a lot of times it seems. They are so focused on that particular hog that they aren’t thinking about or paying attention to anything else. My dogs relay pretty quick, sometimes Ava will leave too soon in my opinion. Like the second she sees me she leaves not the second I have the hog under control. It’s ok if the bulldog has something else helping but not if she’s his only help. I like to have to dig those back legs out from under them. It’s easier on me and the catch dog. I try pretty hard when I have those grittier types to assign them to the people hunting with me that whoever doesn’t leg the hog, that the next person should get that pup off first and get it back away from the hog and try and send it with the older dogs if possible or in the direction that the older dogs went. If it comes back, I tie it back away from the hog and keep it quiet until they hear the next bay. It doesn’t usually take long to give them the idea that they can hurry and go find another one to bite.

Lol that’s funny Cajun. It’s really honest too. You mentioned that you had three litters out of the same stud, this pup of Highwater’s being out of one of those. You said that your full sibling is also pretty salty. Are the pups from the other two litters as salty? Are the gyps they are out of different as far as grit?

No doubt man.   There ain’t much Mike ain’t rite about when it comes to dogs. lol.  It a puzzle that we try and put together when we talk about making a good hog dog.  We gotta make as many right decisions as we can and make em at the right time too.

Highwater 100% agree, Cajun is pretty dang sharp and it’s for sure a puzzle. You know, I love talking dogs with knowledgeable people. Nobody has all the answers, there are million different styles and preferences about how to do what we do, but there are a lot of people on here that can teach us or at least teach me things. I love to hear how everyone thinks and their approach. You take three of the smartest most successful people off of here and ask how they would go about doing a particular thing. They may all be very similar answers with a few slight tweaks for one or all of them. You might get three totally different approaches and all of them are right because they’ve been working obviously. You can ask all three to watch a video or hunt with a particular dog(s) and get one common answer about what they see or three different ones because people seem to focus on different aspects or look it with a different perspective. If you see someone that is great at something, you see someone that is passionate about that particular thing. They pour themselves into and become students of it. The knowledge on here allows some of us that want to be great, a tool to get closer to our goal even if we might not have all the tools (smarts in my case) to accomplish it. I hope that people keep sharing and keep asking questions on here.
