HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Catch & Release: Pros and Cons
|

I know this is an old thread but I find everyone's opinion interesting and understandable. So I'll give my 2 cents lol well I'll start off by saying when I was younger, if we caught a hog, it was coming out of the woods and going to a buyer. Hardly ever barred one unless we were in a tight spot. Nowadays, I'm older and have a good job and don't necessarily need the extra money from hogs so cuttin hogs is more the thing. I've barred more hogs this year then I have since I've started hunting. Now with that being said, I'm beginning to realize that just like deer, hogs need to be managed too. So this is where I begin to disagree with some folks, although I do understand some areas are less populated with hogs and killing is not needed, but as I was saying, there are certain hogs that need killing if you are wanting a particular area to have BIG hogs when you go hunt. For instance if I catch a big sow and don't need the meat I'll mark her ear bob her tail and cut her loose but if I catch a raw boney sow that looks horrible I'm gonna kill her and if we get amongst a pile of pigs I'll kill them as well, unless there are a few that have good color. And like I said earlier, just about every boar we catch now is getting cut, marked, and released. I'd say 90%. I like this thread, and everyone's point of view. Thought I would keep it going.

I'm not sure if it's under warranty I bought it from a guy off this site...
And sometimes the only thing it will let you click on is the map and after you get the map on the screen you can't back out, and a couple times it even froze up after I got it to the dog list screen, that's when I would turn it off and then back on.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Alpha Problems
|
on: June 03, 2016, 11:50:56 am

The last time I went hunting my alpha did not want to work. It would come on and work for maybe a minute or so and then it would stop working. The screen never went black it just wouldn't let you click on anything. Sometimes when you cut it off and back on it would work then mess up again, or sometimes it wouldn't work at all until after several minutes. Anyone know what the problem might be or what I can do? It caused me to lose a dog that day that I didn't know was bayed, he ended up getting killed because I couldn't see where he was at. I updated the system after I bought these last couple of collars a couple months ago. Any advice would be great.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Different Style Question.

Well it sounds to me like you already have your mind made up on what style dogs you want. If you're wanting something that will "go yonder" you're more then likely gonna have a cast dog. But I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that to some ppl, that's just what I think and that's how I like to hunt. I like to pull into a place, drop dogs on the ground, and in X amount of time hear them or see them on the Garmin bayed up. Keep in mind that long range, and bottom are 2 completely different things... In my opinion anyway... I guess it all depends on how you guys get around. To me a "road hunting" and "walk hunting" are the same style hunting. You're pushing your dogs with both styles. The only difference would be if you have a hood dog while road hunting. I don't know, I don't really like either one of those styles, it always seems to me like you're doing all the work, pretty much having to find the hogs for the dogs. IMO if you have a dog that can smell a hog and take a fresh track and has no range to him, you have yourself A) either a cull or B) a road/walk dog... Like I said it just depends on what you are able to do in your terrain. Hope that helped you on your question. And all you road and walk hunters; don't take this comment the wrong way, I just personally don't care for those styles! It's whatever floats ya boat. Not stepping on toes here lol

*Not pictured -
2 Boar hogs from the same hunt where my girlfriend and I are knelt by the sow and ranger-
First boar was about 100 lbs- the pics are on the phone I lost. We barred him. Second boar was the last hog we caught that day. Had to cross a fence and walk 600 yards to him, sent the bulldog and caught him. He weighed somewhere around 215. We also barred him. And as luck would have it, amongst 3 ppl including myself, no one had a phone lol and by the way, that happened to be the hunt I lost my phone on! Haha

I don't really care for it. I like the 4 strand the best but that's just me and sometimes it's just whatever rope you grab before you're running from the buggy to a bay lol
