Good looking dogs & nice hunt. What is the breeding behind that black &  white dog?
1982  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: open mouth dogs on: April 12, 2016, 08:50:19 pm
If you hunt him with silent dogs, He might go silent. JK. He is trash so send him to me & I will hunt him with other trashy open mouth dogs.
1983  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Breeding Better Dogs 101... on: April 12, 2016, 04:32:40 pm
I just had a litter where one male & 3 females were twice as big as their siblings (five- 3 males & 2 females). Talked to my Vet about it & she said no doubt the bigger pups were from the first breeding & the smaller pups were from the 2nd or 3rd breeding. I always breed a gyp every other day while she is in heat trying to catch the entire heat cycle. Now I wonder if that is a good thing. All the pups are healthy looking, just never had that many smaller ones.

1986  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: New pups... on: April 06, 2016, 11:47:03 am
I like the way you stacked the pedigree. Should be some good dogs like what you have had. Good looking pups.
1987  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: The Boars Nest on: April 04, 2016, 09:41:14 pm
Out of the top pic. the only sow is the little guilt on top of the second & 3rd hog. All the rest are boars, even the little striped pig. It was a male bonding kind of day. Also not pic. was the hog Brad's dog drowned in the ship channel. Could not get to him.

Man, that looks like fun but if you pull a few in,I bet it starts to feel like work. Those are nice fish.
1989  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: The Boars Nest on: April 04, 2016, 08:33:22 pm
Thanks everybody. It is always nice when you are in hogs.
Highwater, the gators are out for sure. We might make one or two more trips on a cool morning but the marsh is just about done for us. What part of the country are you from?

Ethan has tamed the Beast.

1992  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / The Boars Nest on: April 03, 2016, 11:53:13 am
I had two Plott legends come down to hunt with me. Tom Telford & Greg Michels. Perfect timing because I had a invite from two friends Joe Ramagoes & TJ Sapia to hunt their property. This is like the Promised Land, I mean Hog Heaven. It is infested with hogs. Good friends Brad Huff & my buddy Charlie Gaines were on the hunt.
Charlie has been making the switch to Plotts that I have given him & Joe & TJ have already seen the light. They have already gone to all Plotts.
We are headed down the road & I spotted a real good track in the road. After about 10 minutes we got the track where he left the road & put a couple of dogs down. They were having trouble lining it out but Flash finally got it straight & was able to jump the hog. He ran him about a mile or so & he would bay & the hog would break. We got a couple more dogs into him  & they caught a 175# boar with 2" cutters in the middle of a field. Tom saw a good boar cross the road so we put out on him & that hog led us to a group of hogs & the dogs split up. We were following Bonny & she would bay & break. Brad turned his cur dog in & I turned a young dog in & they bayed another good boar with 3" cutters. TJ turned his Dogo in & caught hog. Went to catch up with others & TJ & Joe had two more hogs caught. Another 200# boar & about a 100# boar. Flash had rolled out with another hog & he was out of pocket. We caught up to some of the other Plotts & caught some others. It is all running together & it is hard to keep up with them. We followed Brad's cur dog & found him in the ship channel on top of a hog. Brad was able to call him out but we could not retrieve the hog. When we finally caught up with Flash, Tom & Greg said he had been bayed over a hour & we went in & caught about a 120# boar. On the way out dogs caught another 100# boar in the water.
We were trying to figure out how many hogs we had. There are 9 pictured but there were probably 2 or 3 more shoats that the dogs caught that we could not retrieve. All in all, we had a action packed day & were done by about 3:00.
Big thanks to TJ & Joe for the invite.
We saw a monster running down the road & my Grandson Ethan takes off after him. After a mighty footrace Ethan finally catches up to the beast only to have him turn around & charge him. After a mighty battle with it chewing on Ethans boot, he was able to break him off & capture the mighty beast.
The boar that was 2nd from the left had real good tusks but we forgot to prop his mouth open for a good smile & he had stiffened up so his tusks are not shown. I have never seen a group of all boars together but when the dogs ran that one boar into the group, they were all boars that the dogs rolled out on.

1994  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Monday's Hunt. 3-28-16 on: March 31, 2016, 12:59:50 pm
MAN, Y'all sound like a bunch of wussie Deer hunters. lol  The marsh we hunt is not bad. it has a pretty solid bottom. I have been in marshes where you sink to your waist with every step. Once the dogs caught a sow in a wet marsh & it took us a hour to go 200 yards. Not fun. The Gnats are bad in the spring. the snakes don't bother me. As long as you don't look down, you will never see them. haha. The gators don't bother me either but I really like my dogs to much to turn them into Lizard food. What generally happens is the hog will swim a bayou & the gators always come check out what makes all the splashing & about the time the gators get there, here comes the dogs. So we do go to higher ground when it warms up.
1995  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Monday's Hunt. 3-28-16 on: March 30, 2016, 02:08:40 pm
If you hunt down there during the warmer months, the hogs will be pretty fat but I normally hang it up in the marsh in early april. Gators are out & if you hunt down there it is just a matter of time & you will lose a dog. Besides the gnats & mosquitos will carry you off.
1996  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Monday's Hunt. 3-28-16 on: March 30, 2016, 01:36:30 pm
Parker, when you look out over the marsh, you would swear nothing could live out there but nutrias, coons or ducks but it is a haven for wildlife. Deer, hogs coyotes, rabbits, alligators, you name it all thrive out there. There are very few oak trees which dispels the notion that deer  or hogs have to have Mast to survive. The hogs do get a little thin Dec. thru Feb. but start putting weight back on in latter March when things start greening up. It is almost sub tropical out there & this year I do not believe they even had a frost down there. The hogs also don't get as big as they do on higher ground where they have more to eat but they survive out there very nicely. There is a grass that grows out there, we call it a 3 corner grass & the hogs love it. It is my favorite place to hunt & what I call the easiest hog hunting I do. On my side of the lake you have a lot of cutover & briar thickets you have to go thru to get to the bay. The only thing that makes it tough is the tide & it limits you to where you can hunt.
1997  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Monday's Hunt. 3-28-16 on: March 30, 2016, 07:15:10 am
Went Monday & the dogs rigged. We turned out Clyde & Velvet. They went a couple hundred yards & bayed. We tried to get in but the tide was out & we could not get closer then about 20 feet to the bank. Finally my Grandson Ethan waded in with the bulldog & started to them only to have the hog break so he came back to the boat. The dogs ran another 15 minutes or so & bayed up. Still could not get close to them & the hog ended up breaking again. A hour later when they were crossing some water by shore I called them in. They waded all the way to the boat.
Went down to some deeper canals & got a good strike. Turned out & the dogs jumped and the race was on. The dogs bayed about 70 yards off the bank & we sent the bulldog. By the time I got there they had the hog down & the bulldog off. About a 170# boar.
Went to a different area & got another good strike & we turned out. We started hearing pigs squeal & started in. By the time we got there, we found two pig Mcnuggents & the dogs had relayed out. We went back to the boat & in a few minutes heard them bayed. Walked in & caught about a 175# sow. Since it was hard to get around, we called it a day. Only 10:30 am so we got home early. My Grandsons Ethan & Jake are sure making some hands.

Yep, He pushed his way in.
1999  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Surprise Hunt on: March 29, 2016, 01:15:53 pm
I went to run some pups in the pen & lo & behold, they bayed up. I keep a 90# running sow in there & she has never bayed before. My Grandson Ethan & I snuck in there & it was a descent size boar. We caught all the puppies out of there because he was a little more horsepower then I wanted those pups on.  I put a couple of young dogs in there & bayed him again & we sent Ethans bulldog in & she sealed the deal. Got him out of there & castrated & sent him on his way. I don't think he will be back.

2000  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: animal mounts on: March 26, 2016, 07:59:27 am
Two of my Boar mounts. The life-size with the dog belongs to a friend of mine.

The hog I got mounted on the left was caught a 100 yards or so from my friends mount a year later.
