262  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: line breeding and imbreeding... on: January 08, 2012, 08:28:40 am
you see a lot of guys line breeding. A lot of coon and bear hunters do it to. I made a cross from a male that was a brother to sister cross. He had his dad in his ped 5 times. Now the male wasn't the best coon dog in the world, but he had a lot of things in him I wanted. He had a loud bawl mouth, wider chest,  a short stockier build, and a out going personality. Yes I said personality. He was a people person dog that was super friendly and interacted with strangers and did really well with kids. He wanted to make you the owner happy.... If that makes any since.... Anyways I put him on my female. She had the nose, the grit, the speed and the right build, but she was a chop mouth dog and not as much as a people person dog. WHAT DID I GET?Huh? One of the best crosses I've ever made.  I have a pup now that combined the best of parents. Out of 7 pups only 3 are still alive. out of the 7 one died when it was laid on by the mother at around 4 days old. The other 6 grew up nicely. I sold one to a guy in Oklahoma who was make'n her a heck of a coon dog until he o.d. her on wormer and she died. 2 went to a hog hunter and were looking good when one was hit I think by a car and the other one just died the other day. I think from a virus, but I'm not sure and he's not sure eather. HOMETOWN HOGDOGGER has a blk/tan male that I think is make'n a heck of a hog dog. My buddy in Louisiana has the other female. She is make'n him a heck of a coon dog. Now that I got the female I want with all the traits I wanted, I'm looking for just the right male to boost it even more. Once I have that male and make that cross then I will line breed from there and see what we turn out. Her is the only  bad thing from doing alll this.... It can take a year before you really see how your pups turn out. If they dont turn, then it's back to the drawing board. Genetics is a bunch of this. Go with the best natural hunting dog you can. A whole list of grand champions in the background doesn't mean crap if what you have doesn't hunt. Not all pups out of a litter are equal. Not all are hammer down tree smart dogs. By crossing and breeding your own, you will get what you want.

Good luck with your breeding. Be ready to cull or give away pups. MAybe in a couple of litters you'll have what you want and when you get it... dont get rid of it..... LOL

A lot of guys up north, west and east use American leopard curs. Some guys here in Texas are using walkers, blue dogs and red dogs. I have leopards. Just hunting coons with them now. I have a buddy in Poteet tx that is going to run them on cats and lions.  A few have tried leps on hogs. Some do good and some don't. I like what I got, but I only hunt coons. You can also look up Mike Toth at bearmtnguideservice.webs.com or look at the "proboard" it's all about leopard dogs and breeds and pictures.

I like to see pictures too. I got another question, why cant we make a comment or (reply) on the classified section. Am I doing something wrong or is just like that. I think you could ask a little more about the dogs and you could hear from others that may have info on the dogs or it's background.  Huh?

266  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / ukc reg american leopard cur @@ SOLD@@@ on: December 24, 2011, 07:47:26 am

DOG HAS SOLD

I have a solid black UKC reg American Leopard cur (hound). She is lightly started on coons.  The reason I am selling her is because she is silent on track. I've tried and tried to get her to open and she wont unless she sees the coon on the ground and is chasing it. She has ran a deer so she would need to be broke off deer. She has never been around cows or other live stock so I'm not sure what she'll do there.  She will tree a coon with other dogs. I'm still working with her on coons. She is very gamey and very fast. She has a good nose and a lot of grit. Because she is so silent I think she would make a awesome hog dog.  There are very few american leopard hounds here in texas.   I paid 400 for her and thats what I want for her. She's around 16 or so months old. I would also trade a used garmin and a couple collars fer her. MIke 254-631-9883 text for more info. makr112867@yahoo.com.

I think you'll sale your dogs or pups faster with a picture. Plus it should cut down on the phone calls and texts. You should just get the guys that are truly just interested in what you have instead of just going by what you post in a text. Pictures say a 1000 words....

I have sold a few of my american leopard curs to a few hog hunters and they seem to love'm. They may be a little mouthy for you though.  I like'm more than a hound because of their brains, energy, grit, nose, feet and they want to please their owners. Look at hometown hog doggers vid on youtube. He has a black and tan leopard cur that came out of my kennel. Like I say he may be a little mouthy, but they love the dog crap out of him. Here is a picture of his sister and a couple of my leopards. I have a female that should have pups in feb and I'll breed a female in june or so. I really like leopards. I use them for coon hunt'n, but they are used all over the country for hogs, bear, lion, and cat.
the light colored lep will be bred in june or so

the female I'm get bred this wk

thanks

Keep your kennel clean, treat with the CHEAP ivomec and CHEAP goat wormer and you should be fine.  Just like going to walmart and buying a bottle of bayer tree and shrub insect killer 19.95 a quart.  It will treat  over 900 dogs. use 1/2 cc on base of tail and 1/2 cc between shoulder blades and your problems are solved.  It has the same ingredient imidacloprid  in it for killing flees and ticks.  It is the same thing they use to make advantage flea and tick with, but it wont cost you 35 bucks or so  plus it will last you years. I also treat the ground and the beds. But do what you want.  I just know my dogs are health, fat as a hog and tickless.... Smiley
271  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: wormer on: December 01, 2011, 06:18:57 pm
I wouldn't start the Ivomec until the pups are atleast 6 months old. I use a cheap puppy wormer  for pups.  Just make sure it'll kill hook worms.
272  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: wormer on: December 01, 2011, 06:05:00 am
I would just run down to Tractor Supply Co. and a bottle of Ivomec for cattle and a bottle of liquid goat wormer. I use a 11 cc. total...  1 cc of ivomec and 10cc of the liquid goat wormer.  The only thing I dont like about the horse wormer is that you dont know how it's mixed in the tube.  It's designed for a one single dose on a 1000+ lb horse.  I would rather know for sure how much ivomec their getting.  I've only been doing it every other month here because it's been so dry and we haven't had the flee, tick or mosquito problems. I think the bottle of Ivomec was 38 bucks and the goat wormer was 19 or so, but they last a LONG TIME.....

thanks

273  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: sick pup on: November 20, 2011, 07:23:20 am
I don't know if it's the same thing or not, but my nephew had half his littler come down with a type of pneumonia.  They had the same symptoms your pup has. They also lost a lot of weight.  One thing he did was give a penicillin shot to everyone of them.  He didn't know what they had until he got'm to the vet.  He had lost 2 in a matter of 2 days. Force feed that rascal the liquid, if you have the pc give him a shot, then take him to the vet asap. I would also have him checked for hook worms.....

LEXI.. My black gyp. Not my best, but best prospect. A little over a year old with all the qualities to make a real good one. She's my favorite

Hey what is she out of.  I have a american leopard hound that looks a lot like her. Here are my 3 leopard hounds on a coon
275  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Safeguard for hookworms? on: November 19, 2011, 07:57:33 am
I worm every 2 months.  I use 1 cc of Ivomec for heart worms mixed in with 10cc of liquid goat wormer. I get it all from TSC.  The only thing I don't like the zimecterin gold or any paist is that you really dont know how well it's blended.   They blend that stuff to be used as 1 dosage and I dont know if I trust how it comes out.  The goat wormer is pretty cheep and will last a long time.  It works for me....

good luck with your dogs
