Sorry...just noticed your post.

I hunted for many years with only a single dog and rifle.  Killed more hogs than you can shake a stick at.  A group of us hunting yesterday were having this same discussion.  I believe that hunting this way will teach you things that often are overlooked with other methods.  For example, being quiet and slow getting to a bay so you can position yourself for a shot.  Also being able to understand that broken bays and running hogs aren't always the fault of the hog itself.  When I hunted that way, probably 99% of the hogs I shot never left within 50 yards of where the dog struck.  He was a very loose baying dog and as a result the hogs seldom ran.  I attribute this to the fact he knew how to work a hog and knew how and when to apply just the right amount of pressure.  I never owned a tracking system, and can't really recall a time when I needed one.  I also walk hunted.

Very effective way of hunting if you have small areas of land with plenty of hogs.
