depends on the situation id say. if its in the open w/ nothing for the hog to get the penned into then 50-60yds isnt unreasonable. If its thick 20-30yds if your right behind him. if hes an older dog and a good count then depending on what your goal for the hog is, are both something that goes into that decision. my standard now for goin on 10 years is in between 30 and closer w/ a good  dog one that is just starting i want ot give him a little longer to get that good catch so he'll be out to 50 and 60 but im right behind him. hope that helps
