i have had the same thing happen before w/ young dogs i'm just startin. they cant keep up with the big dogs gettin to the bay or they get separtated and scared cause they are alone in an unfamilar place. I generally try to hunt them more in the daylight until they are able to keep up w/ the big dogs. i would give them time, they should grow out of it. IMO
the pup thats "runnin like a retard" will eventually figure it out & learn to listen better. staged hunts should help. letting other dogs bay, making sure he hears it good, and turning him loose from a distance should help him learn to follow the barks to the bay. thats how i teach my small pups to go to a bay.
