Go to Tractor Supply and look in the Horse & Cattle small feed trough section and by the automatic waters there should small burlap bag that is for water troughs to help control algea.  It does nt hurt horse, cattle or dogs and will sink to hte bottom of the bucket.  May cost ya around 5 bucks.

P.s. they do work too with no vinager or bleach added to your dogs water
