Jared, i have always heard that if you dont staple it within 4 hours or so, its pretty much just wasting staples. The way i do mine that get cut like that is leave it open, flush it out everyday and apply wound-kote. If you use the wound-kote, try to let it dry before letting the dog lick it or they will have a purple tongue for a while!      and so will your fingers if you get it on them. You work almost right across from
TSC, so you shouldnt have a problem finding it!!
