If you are going to staple you need to do so withina few hours or else the dead tissue  won't grow together anyway,

depending on where and how the cut is made decides if it should be stapled, some heal faster stapled and others do better with hydrotherapy (hard water pressure for more than 10 minutes atleast twice a day) and allowing the dog to lick it himself both stimulate new tissue growth
