Cedar can irritate respiratory tract and some dogs have allergies to it. They swell up like a balloon. Some people maintain that pine shavings are bad as well, but no dog I have ever had has had a reaction to non cedar horse bedding. We use regular kiln dried shavings on our floors in cold weather, but rake it all up before the fleas start to emerge in the late spring. Our dogs are inside the barn so the shavings dont get wet. I like to use good clean hay in dog houses and dog boxes.
