We have had several of our house pets, #1 catch dogs live out their life at old age, most were semi retired between 5-6 years from catching, but used for many other purposes. All dogs but one little mutt have to have a job, not because I am hardazz but because, its the healthiest for the mental state of the dog.
My daughter ws raised with this and yes these dogs slept with her at times, now a freshman at A&M, with her House pet is as good of a strike dog as any on my yard, wears a pink Aggie collar and visits with alot of College kids. When they come home they still go to the woods, my Daughter is fully aware of what can and does happen as she has helped put handle and put dogs back together. She is an animal Science major with a goal of becoming a Vet.
My belief is this, DON"T SUGAR COAT IT, BE HONEST, I never lied to my daughter aboutthye realities. She was allowed to choose between a "cute little pet" or a working dog, if she got a working then it has to work, if you don't then the dog will be gone. I meant it, I stuck to it and she learned valuable lessons from it. Like I said I gave her the option for her own dogs, and well I am very proud to say today, she still knows the consequences and makes her own choices, right or wrong the consequences are her own to deal with, but We never put any deception there. To many touchy feely people in this world trying to hide things from their kids, and we wonder why the youth of don't have any values of responsibility? I will get off my soap box, as this was not meant towards people that introduce their kids to hunting and the outdoors and keep their kids active. JMO in a nutshell, I love my Catchdogs as a family, I love them enough that I want them to be fullfilled in the canine world, and that comes from being used just as much as it does from being a beloved pet, and thats why I would not deny my working bred dogs the oppertunities to work, No more than I would keep my daughter locked in the house because i am afraid she might be involved in a car accident.
