I much prefer to catch hogs, but I always try to carry a gun "just in case". My trouble is I usually only carry a .22 pistol. That worked for years, been the only gun I carried for probably 20 years and have shot and killed boar hogs over 220 lbs with it. But last Feb two of my dogs got on a bad boar hog, 2 miles from the truck and all I had was that .22 pistol. After having him wreck both my dogs, and having shot him 8 times, in the head, and him still standing, still cutting dogs and still wanting to fight, I was wishing I had more firepower.......
I will now always carry a gun, just for those few times you may need it.
Hope your dogs heal up quick.
