My hog hunting partner also deer hunts with hounds. They are a mixed breed line owned (good hounds bred to good hounds) for more than 40 years. ONE of these hounds will take any track made by any animal. Once he is put on a track he will run that track until he is found or the animal is killed.

This is not a hog dog, but we have found a use for him. He bawls every breath (very loud) and usually keeps a hog moving all day. He bays way back from the hog. The hog will bay by choice and when the dog doesn't put any pressure on it, will move again. "Slow motion hog hunting"

We hunt on a very large public property and there are areas where dog hunting is not allowed. We use this dog to run hogs or deer out of closed areas and into the dog hunting areas. Then we catch the hound and put silent dogs on the hog when the hog is where we want him. Sometimes it works and sometimes we have to go back and find him the next day.

We can put him on a track and go hunt somewhere else. We track him from time to time to keep up with his "race".

If no hog tracks, he can be put on a deer just the same. Then I go home. I don't like hounds, but always ask if he is in the truck!!

My opinion about hound crosses: When you cross a hound you never know until 2 years old if the dog will be silent or open. I have had hound crosses, but their loud and constant voice out ran their track speed. If they are silent there is nothing better for a trail dog.
