I like to hunt one dog at a time as much as I can. It shows what the dog is capable of and what he is not. If you have one dog out and he/she is consistently finding, stopping and baying hogs, on different tracts of land, then you can bet you have a good one.

But, with young dogs to train I have to hunt one old dog and one young dog at times. Rarely will I have 3 dogs on the ground at one time.

To me the disadvantages of running more dogs at a time is you don't know what dog is doing most of the work. And if they get on a small hog its either so chewed up its worthless for anything, or its dead by the time you get there. If they get on a big hog, most dogs get a lot braver with a lot of other dogs and you get more wrecks that way .Especially if they are a long ways from you.

I also feel a lot of times a hog will bay with 1-2 dogs but will break and run with packs. He feels outnumbered with a lot of dogs, but may feel he can stand and fight with just 1-2 dogs on him.

These are just my opinions. Different people hunt different ways though, so its whatever works.
