bear and coon are suppose to be close in scent too. My Nimmer dog bit a bear in the face on his first bear hunt and got away with on the second he bit the bear on the face and got swatted across the back, I thought he broke his back but he didnt and know he has learned to apply just enough pressure to put the bear in the tree.
