I always thought mine would have learned. we got on a small group the other evening and got a few caught then my young dog went and found him a porcupine. he didn't have many just pulled them right there on the spot and was done with it. I've pulled quills out about a dozen times this year. I got an older dog that quit biting them and sit back and bay...or so I thought and the next time he found one he latched on again. these have all been cur dogs. they bayed one up one evenin' and I cut my bulldog loose and we pulled about 300 out of her in the field but that was my fault for turnin' her loose. I don't think they ever learn but the porcupines are starting to get a lil thin around here  Grin
