In the past I tried to do things as cheap as possible and always ended up paying for it.  Dog fights, chains getting tangled up, ticks and fleas eating my dogs alive, dogs climbing out, chewing/pushing their way out through the chain link.....etc.  In my opinion if you plan on hog hunting and raising hog dogs for a long time you would be better off just pouring a pad and building some dog proof kennels.

I built mine with the 2 x 4 horse panels and put a top on three of them for the climbers.  I had all the oil field pipe laying around so that cut some of my cost.  I built automatic waters that come up through the pad and put latches on the gates that the dogs can never get open.  To me dogs on concrete don't have near the parisite problems that a dog would have living on dirt.  I hardly have any ticks on my dogs and never see worms but I do worm regularly.  These kennels were NOT cheap but to me it's been night and day difference from my other kennels and chain setups.  I have a drain on both sides that runs down the hill about 30 yards into a ravine on my property.  EPA probably wouldn't like it but it keeps the smell to a minimum and I never have to scoop poop.  I spray permethrin (SP?) around the kennels to keep the fleas and ticks to a minimum and wash them out with bleach once or twice a month.  I have yet to have any problems with mine and plan on building insulated dog houses on the outside of each kennel before this winter.  I hate messing with hay, it clogs my drain if to much gets washed down at once.  Just some ideas for you.  Like said above, search kennels on this site and you'll get plenty of good ideas on chain setups and kennels. This is what has worked for me.  It's not the only way to do it.  I've seen some real good chain setups and other kennels on dirt that worked fine if you can keep them from digging out.
