Jared,
I would look at a couple of things....I know they are simple, but sometimes the simple things work.
Were the batteries in your GPS full/strong? Maybe, his batteries were in better shape. You should have been able to pick up beyond 400 yards. How about antennas. Were they the same or did he have a different type of antenna; again, both should be able to pick up beyond 400. Check your antenna connection, maybe it was loose.
How about your other dogs, what happened when they went beyond 400yards? If you were able to pick them up, but not the dog in question, I would wait and try it again.
Another thing..I saw something similar happen one time. A guy (call him guy A) tried adding another guys dog (lets call him Guy B). When the prompt asked guy A if this was his dog (becuase he could not touch the unit) he said yes; in fact it was not. I wonder if he added your collar and said it was his dog....would it make a difference. I think it could if you had same collar IDs.
