My vet explained it to me that demodex tic mange is not contagious but typically a genetic weakness that doesn't allow the dogs immune system to fight off the mites that cause this mange. Most all dogs have the mites on them, but are able to keep it under control (even humans have demodectic mites in their eyebrows).
