All the early 2000's water cooled Yamaha's had that problem. Had 2 grizzly's and a kodiak that all had that problem. You had to keep the radiator impossibly clean. Yamaha fixed the problem on all of mine by adding adding a heat shield over the muffler and between the tank. I think after 2005 they fixed the problem.

My brother had the Yamaha big bear 400 4x4 and it was hands down the best of the Yamaha's. Air cooled and manual trans and it was bullet proof.
