After a bad experience a few years ago I always at least make sure there is one close by, on the saddle, in the truck, on the 4 wheeler even if it is not on my hip.  Used to I wouldnt and on a few places we couldnt but I see no reason to go to the woods without one now.  My little .44 lever gun has made plenty of trips to the woods with me and will continue to do so!
