I had a tendon behind my ankle (torn) repaired last year.  They billed the over $12,000 but since I had insurance they only paid the negotiated amount which was less than $4,000.  Bottom line, when the insurance company doesn't control the price it becomes outrageous.  It just costs so much more to pay cash.
