While it is hot, I don't consider it sacraficing the dogs. I expect them to be conditioned and able to hunt year round. Some places that we hunt will be become someone elses place to hunt if you give the pigs a break. I won't fault anyone for not hunting while it's hot, we each hunt the way we want, but a dog that overheats on a typical summer night is a dog that I don't need. As always, conditioning is key, if they are used to it they can handle it. Anthony [/quote]
I believe this was the best answer so far. Dogs must be conditioned. Using dogs in the heat is a business for me. Whether i am hog hunting, or catching cattle. Landowners expect you to rid or control the population of hogs. Cattle are bought and sold year round. So my dogs are used. Yes from time to time they may get too hot, just like me or my horses, or cattle we are moving. But here is the kicker. As a responsible animal owner you must know how to treat this, and be ready. I still work in the heat, i cant afford to take off 6 months of the year in texas. You also have to look at this two ways. First the heat, but second the cold. When you bay a hog in the freezing water and the dog is hot from running it there is the chance for hypothermia. Summer Heat/Winter Cold. I work in both and so will my critters.
