We have a pit that we use as a catchdog and have never had any problems with as far as human agression but I would never let him run loose and I would never trust him with strangers. I love him to death but I know that he has lots of prey drive and he is very powerful with no quit to him.
I also have little patients with ignorant people.
One time we were going hunting and had about 6 of our dogs chained in the bed of our truck. We stopped at a station on the way to grab some drinks and ice. We parked the rig well away from the pumps and where cars were parked.
It was a huge parkinglot. As we made our way to the store, I glanced back at the rig to make sure that the dogs were all okay. My heart stopped as I watched a little boy about 5 or 6 years old run from where him mother was pumping fuel in her car to our truck.
Without any hesitation he jumped up on the side of our truck to pet the dogs. As I ran towards the truck, I looked over at his mother who was looking in his direction but never said a word. Just kept on pumping fuel.
Of course all of our dogs just licked him in the face as he giggled with delight. But when I reached the truck, I gave him a stern talking to about running up to strange dogs.
Our dogs love people but what if they would have been asleep and he would have startled them. I hate to even think about it. Now, one of us usually stays at the truck with the dogs.
I watched the little boy so that he wasn't hit by a car while he ran back to his mothers car. I turned and said a few words to her as well about it not being safe to let him run up to strange dogs. Her ignorance was going to get that little boy hurt.
