The dogs have to be able to catch up to them before they can stop them. I've seen several dogs that could shut them down in open pasture but very few, 1 maybe 2, that could "consistently" shut them down in a thicket with a head start unless that hog wanted to stop and they still got beat alot. The best brush dogs I've seen were small framed dogs but then they are at a disadvantage in big open pastures.
